Used to improve symptoms caused by osteoporosis and vitamin D metabolism disorders, such as hypocalcemia, tetany, bone pain, and changes in the bone. It is also effectively used in chronic renal failure, hypoparathyroidism, vitamin D resistant rickets, and osteomalacia. This drug helps promote bone health and alleviate related symptoms.

How to take

Adult dose

Chronic renal failure/Osteoporosis: 0.5 to 1 ㎍ of alfacalcidol orally once a day. For hypoparathyroidism and other conditions due to vitamin D metabolism disorders: 1 to 4 ㎍ of this drug orally once a day.

Child dose

Osteoporosis: 0.01 to 0.03 ㎍ of alfacalcidol per kg of body weight orally once a day. For other conditions: 0.05 to 0.1 ㎍ of this drug per kg of body weight orally once a day.

Precautions

This drug should not be used in patients with abnormally high levels of calcium, phosphorus, or magnesium in the blood. It should also be avoided in cases of excessively alkaline blood or symptoms of vitamin D overdose. Those allergic to this drug should refrain from taking it. While using this drug, it is important not to take medications containing magnesium, vitamin D related products, calcium supplements, and certain diuretics. It is advisable to avoid breastfeeding during treatment, and if necessary, it is preferable to stop breastfeeding. Women who are pregnant or possibly pregnant should carefully consider the benefits and risks of taking this drug, and children and the elderly also require dosage adjustments and caution. Patients taking certain medications or with a history of kidney stones or sarcoidosis should consult their doctor. Possible adverse effects include dyspepsia, muscle cramps, headache, dizziness, decreased kidney function, skin rash, and eye abnormalities; if these symptoms occur, immediately stop taking the drug and consult a professional. Regularly check serum calcium levels to prevent overdose and seek immediate treatment if hypercalcemia occurs. Additionally, the drug should be stored in a cool, dry place out of reach of children, away from direct sunlight, and not transferred to other containers.
