Efficacy & effects

Treatment of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus not controlled by diet and other measures

View approved original text

This medication is used for patients with insulin-independent diabetes, specifically type 2 diabetes, when blood sugar levels cannot be controlled through diet alone or when diet and sulfonylurea combination therapy are insufficient. It helps to control blood sugar levels and improves diabetes management.

How to take

Adult dose

Take all at once with a small amount of water before a meal, or take with a small amount of food. Adults: The initial dose is 50 milligrams 3 times daily. Depending on tolerability, after 4-12 weeks of treatment, the dose is normally increased gradually to a maintenance dose of up to 100 milligrams 3 times daily.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in certain patients. Individuals who are allergic to this drug or any of its excipients should not take it. Additionally, it should not be taken by children and adolescents under 18 years of age, or by pregnant or nursing women. Patients with inflammatory bowel diseases or bowel-related conditions such as colonic ulcers or bowel obstruction, or those who experience increased intestinal gas should avoid this medication as it may worsen their condition. Patients with significantly reduced renal function, particularly those with creatinine clearance below 25 mL/min, should not take this medication. This medication may worsen hypoglycemia when used in combination with sulfonylurea drugs, so caution is needed when combining therapies. If hypoglycemic symptoms appear, it is recommended to treat with glucose instead of sucrose. Additionally, this medication contains FD&C Yellow No. 5, so patients allergic or hypersensitive to this component should use it with caution. Taking this medication may increase undigested carbohydrates in the intestines, leading to increased intestinal gas, which may cause abdominal bloating, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. These symptoms may be influenced by the dosage and food intake, and may improve over time, so consistent use is essential. Adhering to a diabetes diet and avoiding foods high in sugar may reduce these symptoms. If symptoms persist, consult a physician to adjust or discontinue the dosage. While taking this medication, symptoms such as nausea, constipation, and dyspepsia may occasionally occur. Severe side effects associated with this medication have not been reported in domestic studies; however, symptoms such as vomiting, muscle pain, dizziness, and itching may occur occasionally. There are also interactions with other medications, so caution is advised. Especially when taken with glibenclamide or metformin, the drug effects may change, so consulting a physician is recommended. Additionally, taking this medication with intestinal adsorbents or some digestive enzymes may reduce its effectiveness, so it is best to avoid these combinations. This medication may cause diarrhea, which can enhance the effect when used in conjunction with antidiarrheal agents, so caution is advised. Dose adjustments may be necessary when used with propranolol or ranitidine. It is safest for pregnant or nursing women to avoid using this medication. Animal studies have shown maternal toxicity at high doses, and although this medication is very minimally excreted in milk during lactation, it may affect newborns, thus contraindicated. In case of overdose, gastrointestinal disturbances such as bloating, diarrhea, and abdominal pain may occur, so carbohydrates should be avoided in food or beverage intake for 4-6 hours. Diarrhea symptoms can be managed with standard treatment and additional supportive treatment can be sought if needed. This medication should be stored out of reach of children and should not be transferred to other containers. No specific effects during mechanical operation or driving are known. Chronic administration may lead to weight loss, but no toxic effects on specific organs have been identified.
