This medication is used to treat non-insulin-dependent diabetes that is not adequately controlled by diet alone or is difficult to treat even with a combination of diet and sulfonylurea.

How to take

Adult dose

Take as a single dose with a small amount of water before a meal, or with a small amount of food. Adults: Take 50 milligrams 3 times daily initially. Depending on tolerability, after 4-12 weeks of treatment, the dose is normally increased gradually to a maintenance dose of up to 100 milligrams 3 times daily.

Precautions

This medication should not be administered to certain patients. Patients who are allergic to this medication or its excipients should not use it. Additionally, children and adolescents under 18 years of age, as well as pregnant or nursing women, should not take this medication. Patients with inflammatory bowel disease, colonic ulcers, intestinal obstruction, or who are at high risk for intestinal obstruction should not use this medication. Patients with severe digestive disorders or chronic bowel conditions that may increase intestinal gas should be cautious, as should patients with hernias. Patients with significantly reduced kidney function, particularly those with a creatinine clearance of less than 25 ml/min, should not take this medication. Caution should be exercised when using this medication in certain patients. When taken in conjunction with sulfonylureas, hypoglycemia may become more severe, so dosage adjustments should be made. If hypoglycemic symptoms occur, treatment should be with glucose rather than sucrose, as this medication delays the absorption of monosaccharides. This medication contains the dye Yellow No. 5, so patients who are allergic or sensitive to this ingredient should exercise caution. This medication can increase the amount of undigested carbohydrates in the colon, leading to increased intestinal gas. As a result, symptoms such as abdominal distension, diarrhea, and abdominal pain may occur. These symptoms can vary depending on dosage and food intake, and may alleviate over time. Maintaining a proper diabetic diet and avoiding foods containing sugar or carbohydrates may reduce symptoms. If diarrhea persists, consult a doctor to adjust the dosage or discontinue use. Rarely, symptoms such as nausea, constipation, and dyspepsia have been reported. This medication may interact with other medications, so caution is necessary. In particular, when taken with glibenclamide or metformin, the effects of the medications may change, so doctor’s instructions should be followed. Taking this medication with gastrointestinal adsorbents or certain digestive enzymes may decrease its effectiveness, so co-administration should be avoided. Additionally, taking it with laxatives may enhance the effects of the laxatives, and dosage adjustments may be required when used with propranolol or ranitidine. Pregnant women are advised not to use this medication due to insufficient evidence of safety. While a very small amount of the drug is excreted in breast milk, it is recommended not to use the medication while nursing, for safety reasons. In cases of overdose, gastrointestinal disturbance symptoms such as bloating, diarrhea, and abdominal pain may occur, so intake of carbohydrate-containing foods or drinks should be avoided for 4-6 hours. If diarrhea persists, appropriate treatment should be sought, and treatment should continue as directed by a doctor if necessary. This medication should be kept out of the reach of children, and transferring it to another container should be avoided as it can pose risks of accidents and quality deterioration. Lastly, the effects of this medication on machinery operation or driving are not known; however, weight loss has been observed in chronic toxicity studies, so caution is necessary with long-term use.
