Precautions

This medication helps lower blood glucose and is used in the treatment of diabetes. One of the most important precautions when taking this medication is the possibility of rare side effects like lactic acidosis. Lactic acidosis can cause a serious condition due to excessive accumulation of lactic acid in the body, so if symptoms such as muscle pain, shortness of breath, lethargy, or abdominal pain appear, immediate consultation with a physician is essential. Furthermore, taking this medication in conjunction with other diabetes medications such as insulin or sulfonylureas may increase the risk of hypoglycemia, hence careful monitoring of blood sugar levels is necessary. Patients with impaired kidney function, serious health issues such as acute infections, dehydration, heart failure, or acute myocardial infarction should not use this medication, and those scheduled for surgery should discontinue use 48 hours prior to the procedure. Additionally, this medication is not recommended for patients with poor liver function, severe pulmonary disease, or those with excessive alcohol consumption. Regular kidney function tests should be conducted during treatment, particularly for elderly patients or those with compromised kidney function, and frequency of testing should be increased. Temporary discontinuation of this medication is required before and after tests using iodinated contrast agents, and it can be resumed once kidney function is confirmed to be normal. This medication may increase the risk of genital and urinary tract infections, so immediate treatment is necessary if symptoms of infection occur. There may be a risk of vitamin B12 deficiency, hence patients on prolonged treatment should have their vitamin B12 levels checked regularly. It is advised that women who are pregnant, potentially pregnant, or breastfeeding do not use this medication. Moreover, its safety and efficacy in children under the age of 18 have not been established, so it should not be administered to this age group. Elderly patients are at risk for dehydration and impaired kidney function; therefore, caution is needed during use, and regular kidney function tests are essential. In case of overdose, there is a risk of lactic acidosis, requiring immediate medical attention. This medication should be swallowed whole and should not be crushed or chewed, and it is normal for the coating to be excreted in the stool. Patients should avoid alcohol consumption while on this medication, and regular meals should not be skipped to prevent hypoglycemic symptoms. Lastly, there may be interactions with other medications being taken concurrently, so it is fundamental to inform healthcare providers about all current medications.
