View approved original text

This medication contains both empagliflozin and metformin, and is used to assist in blood sugar control for adult patients with type 2 diabetes alongside dietary and exercise management. It is especially effective in patients whose blood sugar is not sufficiently controlled, and can also be used in patients with cardiovascular disease. However, information from professional clinical trials should be referred to regarding the cardiovascular event-related aspects. This medication helps improve blood sugar management and assists in diabetes treatment.

How to take

Adult dose

The dosage of this medication is determined within the range of a maximum daily dose of 25 mg of empagliflozin and 2000 mg of extended-release metformin hydrochloride, considering each patient's current treatment regimen, efficacy, and tolerability. This medication should be taken once daily in the evening with meals to reduce gastrointestinal side effects caused by metformin. This extended-release formulation of 10/1000 mg or 25/1000 mg is to be administered.

Precautions

This medication is used to treat type 2 diabetes and helps lower blood sugar levels. While taking this medication, caution is required as a rare side effect, severe lactic acidosis, can occur. Lactic acidosis can lead to an excessive accumulation of lactate in the body, which can result in a dangerous condition and potentially lead to death. Additionally, taking this medication with other diabetes drugs may cause hypoglycemia, so careful monitoring of blood sugar levels is necessary. Patients with moderate to severe renal impairment, acute kidney issues, severe infection, or heart disease should not use this medication. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, patients with liver dysfunction, or patients in poor nutritional status should also avoid taking this medication. This medication contains lactose, so patients with lactose intolerance should refrain from taking it. During treatment, regular kidney function tests should be conducted, and especially elderly patients or those with slightly impaired kidney function should be tested more frequently. Patients at risk of reduced fluid volume, for instance, those with dehydration symptoms or severe vomiting or diarrhea, should take this medication with caution. This medication may increase the risk of genital infections and urinary tract infections; if such symptoms occur, medical professionals should be informed immediately. Vitamin B12 levels may decrease, so patients taking this medication long-term should have their vitamin B12 levels checked regularly. Alcohol consumption may increase the risk of side effects from this medication, so it is advisable to avoid excessive drinking while on this treatment. Patients scheduled for surgery must stop taking this medication at least 48 hours before surgery and should resume only after kidney function has returned to normal post-surgery. This medication should be swallowed whole without breaking, crushing, or chewing; the tablet coating may be excreted but this is normal. While taking this medication, if symptoms of hypoglycemia, lactic acidosis (such as fatigue, muscle pain, difficulty breathing, abdominal pain), or infection appear, consulting a doctor promptly is necessary. Elderly patients require particular attention, and it is customary not to administer the maximum dose. In cases of overdose, seek immediate medical attention and proper treatment, which may include blood dialysis.
