Essential hypertension is a condition where blood pressure remains consistently high, putting strain on the heart and blood vessels. This medication is used to control essential hypertension and stabilize blood pressure.

How to take

Adult dose

The recommended dosage for adults is 30 to 60 mg once daily, with or without food. If blood pressure is not adequately controlled, the dose may be increased to 120 mg once daily. It is recommended to take the medication at the same time each day. For elderly patients (over 70 years), the initial dose of 30 mg once daily is advised. Patients with renal impairment do not require dose adjustments for mild to moderate conditions, but severe renal impairment patients should start treatment at 30 mg once daily, not exceeding 60 mg per day.

Precautions

This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus and newborn if taken during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy; therefore, if pregnancy is confirmed, it should be stopped immediately. Patients with allergies to any components of this medication, pregnant or breastfeeding women, patients undergoing renal dialysis, patients with moderate to severe liver impairment, and patients with bile duct obstruction should not use this medication. Additionally, diabetic patients with certain kidney function impairments and patients with specific genetic lactose intolerance should not take this medication. Patients with reduced blood volume or salt levels may experience hypotension; thus, they should be closely monitored when starting treatment or increasing doses. Patients with impaired kidney function, renal artery hypertension, aortic stenosis, or mitral valve stenosis should also be cautiously administered this medication, and those with a history of allergies should exercise caution as well. While taking this medication, various side effects such as headache, dizziness, dyspepsia, muscle pain, skin rash, and others may occur, so it is important to consult a healthcare professional if abnormal symptoms arise. Since hypotension or electrolyte imbalances may occur, patients taking diuretics or on dietary salt restrictions should correct their condition and gradually adjust their doses before taking this medication. Due to the risk of hyperkalemia, patients with heart failure or kidney disorders should have their potassium levels checked regularly. When combined with other antihypertensives, certain diuretics, potassium-sparing diuretics, lithium, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, etc., there may be an increased risk of side effects due to drug interactions, so caution is advised. Use during pregnancy can pose serious risks to the fetus; hence, if pregnancy is suspected or confirmed, it should be stopped immediately, and a doctor should be consulted. Breastfeeding women are advised to discontinue breastfeeding or the medication as this drug may be secreted in breast milk. The safety and efficacy of this medication in individuals under 18 years of age have not been established, so it is advisable not to use it. Individuals aged 65 and older may be more sensitive to medications, but generally, dose adjustments are not required, although caution is advised. Patients with moderate to severe liver impairment should not take this medication, as it can result in abnormally high concentrations of the drug, leading to risk. In cases of overdose, hypotension or cardiac abnormalities may occur, and immediate treatment is required if symptoms appear. This medication should be kept out of reach of children, and transferring it to another container can pose a risk of quality degradation or accidents.

Serious side effects

Urticaria, severe swelling, tightness in the chest, difficulty breathing, cold sweat, pallor, severe rash accompanied by high fever, blisters, skin peeling, pain in the mucous membranes of the mouth/eyes, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, asthma attacks, coughing with fever and respiratory abnormalities, yellowing of the skin or eyes, extreme lethargy, sudden and severe headache, thunderclap headache, seizures, disorientation, visual disturbances, paralysis, significantly reduced urine output.

Mild side effects

Headache, dizziness, fainting, sedation, migraine, dyspepsia, vomiting, nausea, upper abdominal pain, weakness, foreign body sensation, elevated liver enzyme levels, decreased platelet count, increased serum creatine phosphokinase activity, cough, muscle contractions, musculoskeletal stiffness, itching, localized urticaria, facial flushing, erythema, erectile dysfunction, seizures, polyneuropathy, hemiparesis, dementia, Parkinson's syndrome, gait disturbances, optic nerve damage, optic neuritis, neuropathy.

Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.

Storage

This medication is sensitive to light; thus, it should be stored in a container that does not allow light to pass through. Additionally, it should be kept at room temperature between 1°C and 30°C. Storing it this way helps maintain the drug's effectiveness and safety.
