Precautions
This medication is used for the treatment of diabetes and should not be used in patients with poor kidney function, acute infections, dehydration, or unstable heart function.
It can rarely cause serious side effects such as lactic acidosis; thus, it is essential to inform a doctor immediately if symptoms such as muscle pain, breathing difficulties, weakness, or abdominal pain occur while taking this medication.
The risk of hypoglycemia may increase when used with insulin or other blood sugar-lowering agents, thus careful monitoring of blood sugar changes is necessary, and medication dosage may require adjustment if needed.
Urinary tract infections or genital infections may occur, so prompt treatment should be sought if any symptoms of infection appear.
This medication may affect kidney function, making regular blood tests to monitor kidney status important.
Moreover, it may lead to a decrease in fluid volume, and caution should be exercised by elderly patients or those with dehydration or low blood pressure.
It is safest to avoid using this medication in pregnant women or those who may become pregnant, as well as in breastfeeding individuals.
Patients scheduled for surgery or undergoing iodine contrast tests should temporarily discontinue the medication and resume it only after confirming normal kidney function.
This medication should not be chewed or crushed and should be swallowed whole; the tablet coating may appear in the stools, but this is normal.
In case of overdose, immediate medical attention should be sought, particularly because symptoms of lactic acidosis may occur.
Excessive alcohol consumption should be avoided while taking this medication, and any unusual symptoms or suspected side effects related to the medication should be promptly discussed with healthcare professionals.
