This medication is used to treat essential hypertension. Additionally, it helps reduce the risks of myocardial infarction, stroke, and mortality due to cardiovascular diseases in patients aged 55 and over with a high risk of cardiovascular events, such as those with a history of coronary artery disease, peripheral artery disease, stroke or transient ischemic attack, or those with diabetes that has caused damage to end organs. It can be safely administered to patients who cannot use ACE inhibitors. This drug improves cardiovascular health and contributes to the prevention of complications.

How to take

Adult dose

1. Essential Hypertension: For telmisartan, take 40 mg once daily with water, regardless of meals. In some patients, 20 mg once daily may be effective. If necessary, the dosage may be increased to 80 mg once daily, and an increase in dosage occurs after 4 to 8 weeks of treatment to achieve the maximal antihypertensive effect. 2. Risk Reduction in Cardiovascular Disease: It is recommended to take 80 mg once daily.

Precautions

This drug can cause serious harm to the fetus and newborn during pregnancy; therefore, use should be stopped immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. Patients who are allergic to this drug or its components, pregnant or breastfeeding women, individuals with severe liver impairment or biliary obstruction, patients with hereditary angioedema, and those with certain kidney function impairments should not use this drug. Elderly patients, those with hyperkalemia, mild to moderate liver impairment, patients with valvular heart disease or ischemic heart disease, gastrointestinal disorders, or those with renal vascular hypertension should use this drug with caution. While taking this drug, rare side effects such as hypotension, hyperkalemia, renal function impairment, angioedema, liver dysfunction, interstitial pneumonia, and rhabdomyolysis may occur; immediate consultation with a healthcare provider is necessary if symptoms occur. Particularly, diabetic patients should be closely monitored for signs of hypoglycemia, as there may be risks of significantly low blood pressure, fainting, or loss of consciousness. It is safe to take this medication while regularly monitoring kidney function and serum potassium levels, and precautions should be taken in cases of volume depletion or sodium deficiency, as this may lead to hypotensive risks. Moreover, this drug may interact with other antihypertensives, specific diuretics, potassium-sparing diuretics, lithium, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, etc., so it is essential to inform the healthcare provider about any other medications being taken. Women planning or currently pregnant should avoid using this medication, and breastfeeding mothers should also refrain from taking it. This drug is not recommended for children and adolescents under 18 years of age, as safety and efficacy have not been established. In cases of overdose, symptoms such as hypotension, tachycardia, dizziness, and acute renal failure may occur; immediate medical attention should be sought for appropriate treatment. This medication should be kept out of reach of children, and care should be taken as transferring it to another container may adversely affect its quality. Caution is needed while driving or operating hazardous machinery as there may be risks of fainting or dizziness.

Mild side effects

Upper respiratory infection (including pharyngitis, sinusitis), urinary tract infection, cystitis, anemia, thrombocytopenia, eosinophilia, hypersensitivity, hyperkalemia, hypoglycemia, hyponatremia, depression, insomnia, anxiety, fainting, drowsiness, visual disturbances, dizziness, bradycardia, tachycardia, hypotension, orthostatic hypotension, cough, interstitial lung disease, abdominal pain, diarrhea, dyspepsia, abdominal bloating, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, dry mouth, taste abnormalities, liver function abnormalities/liver disease.

This medication should be stored in a tightly sealed container to protect it from air and moisture. The appropriate storage temperature is at room temperature between 1°C and 30°C, avoiding excessively hot or cold places.
