Treatment of erectile dysfunction
This medicine is used for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. Patients can easily take it in various forms such as tablets and orally dissolvable films, and it helps improve the symptoms of erectile dysfunction. When used safely, it can effectively alleviate symptoms.
For sildenafil, the recommended dose of 25 to 50 mg should be taken orally approximately 1 hour before sexual activity. Depending on circumstances, it can also be taken between 4 hours to 30 minutes before sexual activity, and the dose can be adjusted based on efficacy and tolerability. For patients aged 65 and older, those with liver failure, severe renal failure, or when taken with specific CYP3A4 inhibitors, the initial dose should be adjusted to 25 mg.
This medication acts as a vasodilator and may lower blood pressure. Therefore, it should not be used by patients taking nitrate preparations or NO donors as it poses a risk of excessive hypotension. Patients with cardiovascular diseases should have their heart condition thoroughly checked before using this medication, and it should not be used by those with severe cardiovascular conditions or those for whom sexual activity is not recommended. This medication can also cause a temporary drop in blood pressure in healthy individuals, so those with heart disease should be especially cautious. Patients who have experienced serious heart problems or strokes within the last six months, those with hypotension, uncontrolled hypertension, and patients with pigmentary retinopathy should refrain from using this medication. If an erection lasts longer than 4 hours, immediate medical attention should be sought, as untreated conditions could result in damage to penile tissue and loss of erectile function. This medication can significantly increase blood levels when used concomitantly with specific protease inhibitors, thus requiring dose adjustments for patients taking such medications. Additionally, formulations containing the artificial sweetener aspartame should not be provided to patients with phenylketonuria. This medication is not to be used in individuals under 18 years of age and women, and elderly patients should start with a lower dose due to potential increased blood levels. If sudden vision loss or hearing degradation occurs while taking this medication, it should be immediately discontinued and medical advice sought. Furthermore, it should not be taken with other erectile dysfunction treatments, and patients at cardiovascular risk should exercise caution before and after sexual activity. This medication may induce dizziness or visual disturbances during driving or machinery operation, necessitating caution. When taken with certain antihypertensive drugs such as alpha-blockers, there is a risk of hypotension, so dose and timing adjustments are required. In cases of overdose, symptoms such as headaches, flushing, dizziness, digestive upset, and visual disturbances may worsen, and immediate medical assistance should be sought. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and should not be transferred to another container. Lastly, this medication is intended for erectile dysfunction treatment and does not provide sexually transmitted disease prevention effects, so caution is warranted.
