Precautions

This medication is mainly used to control blood sugar. It should not be administered to patients with impaired kidney function, and it is important to regularly test kidney function. Additionally, it is generally not safe to use this drug in cases of severe infection, dehydration, acute illness, or liver dysfunction. Since this drug can rarely cause a serious metabolic disorder known as lactic acidosis, immediate consultation with a doctor is necessary if symptoms such as abdominal pain, muscle pain, weakness, or shortness of breath occur. Since there may be symptoms of hypoglycemia, particularly when used in combination with sulfonylureas or insulin, blood sugar levels should be closely monitored. This medication should be taken during or after meals to reduce gastrointestinal disorders. Pregnant or breastfeeding women are advised to avoid this medication, and if planning a pregnancy, they should consult with their doctor. There could be rare side effects such as acute pancreatitis or bullous pemphigoid-like conditions when taking this medication, so if related symptoms occur, they must inform healthcare providers immediately. Vitamin B12 deficiency may occur, thus patients on long-term treatment should regularly check vitamin B12 levels in the blood. Additionally, this drug should not be chewed, crushed, or broken, but swallowed whole, and the coating of the tablet may be expelled in the stool. This medication can interact with other drugs, so patients should inform their doctor or pharmacist of any other medications they are taking. It may be necessary to temporarily stop this medication before surgery or radiological examinations, so follow the healthcare providers' instructions. Elderly patients are prone to decreased kidney function, so dosage adjustment and monitoring of kidney function are necessary. In case of overdose, the drug can be removed from the gastrointestinal tract, and if needed, it can be eliminated via hemodialysis, so it is crucial to visit the hospital immediately.
