Improvement in blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
This medication is used to help control blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. Linagliptin and metformin work together to complement dietary and exercise therapies. This helps manage blood sugar levels more effectively and contributes to preventing complications by improving blood sugar control. When used safely, it will greatly assist in blood sugar management.
This medication should be taken once daily with meals, preferably with the evening meal. The 5/1000 mg extended-release tablet should be taken once daily at a dose of 1 tablet. The 2.5/1000 mg extended-release tablet should be taken once daily at a dose of 2 tablets simultaneously. To maintain the extended-release properties, do not split, crush, grind, or chew the tablets; swallow them whole. The initial dose consists of 5 mg of linagliptin and 1000 mg of metformin hydrochloride.
This medication helps regulate blood sugar levels. However, there is a rare risk of developing a serious condition called lactic acidosis, so caution is needed. Patients with impaired kidney function or liver problems, as well as those with heart conditions such as acute myocardial infarction or heart failure, should not take this medication. Additionally, it should be avoided in cases of acute infections, dehydration, severe trauma, or conditions that may affect kidney function. Patients with allergies to any ingredient in this medication or those with type 1 diabetes should also not use it. There is a risk of low blood sugar, so caution is necessary when used in conjunction with other medications that can induce hypoglycemia, such as sulfonylureas or insulin. The risk of lactic acidosis may also increase if blood sugar is not well controlled, or if there are prolonged fasting periods, excessive alcohol consumption, liver function impairment, or heart disease. Kidney function must be tested before taking this medication and should be monitored regularly. Particularly elderly or patients with decreased kidney function need to be more cautious. If iodinated contrast agents are used for radiological tests, this medication should be stopped before and after the test, and resumed only after kidney function has recovered. Patients scheduled for surgery should discontinue this medication 48 hours prior to the procedure and restart it once kidney function has recovered afterwards. During the course of taking this medication, acute pancreatitis or skin blistering similar to dermatitis herpetiformis may occur; if these symptoms occur, consult a doctor immediately. When taking this medication, do not crush or chew the tablets; swallow them whole, and while the tablet shell may come out in the stool, this is normal. Additionally, this medication may lower vitamin B12 levels, so if taken for a prolonged duration, it is advisable to check vitamin B12 status through blood tests. When taking this medication with other medications, interactions may occur, so be sure to inform your doctor or pharmacist of any other medications being taken. Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding is not recommended, and patients planning to become pregnant should consult their healthcare provider. Safety in children has not been established, so pediatric use is discouraged. Elderly patients are at a higher risk for decreased kidney function, so dosage adjustments and regular kidney function tests are necessary. In the event of overdose, measures should be taken to remove the medication from the gastrointestinal tract, and if necessary, treatments such as dialysis may be required. Lastly, this medication should be kept out of reach of children, stored in a dry place, and not transferred to other containers.
