Precautions
This medication consists of two components that aid in blood sugar control.
Firstly, one component of this medication can rarely cause a serious condition known as lactic acidosis. Lactic acidosis is a dangerous condition that occurs when there is excessive lactic acid buildup in the body, which can be life-threatening if untreated.
Therefore, it should not be used in patients with certain conditions or severely impaired kidney function. This includes patients with type 1 diabetes, severe renal impairment, acute myocardial infarction, and liver dysfunction.
Additionally, this medication should be avoided in cases of acute conditions such as dehydration, severe infection, severe trauma, and shock.
While taking this medication, hypoglycemia may occur, so caution is needed, especially when used with insulin or sulfonylureas, and dosage adjustments may be required as necessary.
To reduce the risk of lactic acidosis, kidney function should be regularly monitored, and if kidney function declines, this medication should be discontinued.
When iodine-based contrast agents are used during surgeries or radiologic tests, this medication should be discontinued for a certain period before and after the examination, and can be resumed after kidney function is restored.
This medication can cause gastrointestinal disturbances, abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting, most of which improve naturally over time.
Rarely, acute pancreatitis or blistering skin diseases may occur, so if severe abdominal pain or blisters on the skin develop, contact a doctor immediately.
Long-term use may carry a risk of vitamin B12 deficiency, thus when experiencing anemia or neurological symptoms, vitamin B12 levels should be checked and supplemented if necessary.
This medication must be swallowed whole, without crushing or chewing the tablets, and it's normal for some tablet shells to appear in the stool.
Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding are advised to avoid using this medication, and if planning to become pregnant, should consult with a doctor.
Elderly patients are often at risk of reduced kidney function, so regular kidney function checks are advised, and it is preferable to start at the lowest effective dose.
Finally, this medication may interact with various other drugs, so it is essential to inform a doctor or pharmacist of any other medications being taken.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
