Improvement in blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
This medication is used to assist blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes who are taking linagliptin and metformin together. It is effective in improving blood sugar levels when used in conjunction with dietary therapy and exercise, aiding in the management of diabetes.
This medication should be taken once daily with meals, preferably with the evening meal. To maintain its sustained-release properties, it must be swallowed whole without splitting, crushing, grinding, or chewing. The 5/1000 mg sustained-release tablet is taken once daily as 1 tablet. The 2.5/1000 mg sustained-release tablet is taken once daily as 2 tablets. The initial dosage is 5 mg of linagliptin and 1000 mg of metformin hydrochloride, and the maximum metformin hydrochloride dose is 2000 mg.
This medication helps control blood sugar levels. However, it can rarely cause a condition called lactic acidosis, which can be life-threatening; therefore, caution is necessary. Patients who have allergies to any component of this medication, type 1 diabetes, lactic acidosis, severe renal impairment, or hepatic dysfunction should not take this medication. Additionally, it should not be used in cases of severe infections, dehydration, acute myocardial infarction, shock, or any condition that can lead to a rapid decline in renal function. This medication may cause hypoglycemia, so when used with other antidiabetic agents such as insulin or sulfonylureas, blood glucose changes should be closely monitored. Be particularly careful when skipping meals, engaging in excessive exercise, or consuming alcohol, as the risk of hypoglycemia increases. Patients with weakened renal function should have renal function tests before taking this medication, and regularly monitor kidney status during treatment. Patients with compromised heart function must also be cautious when using this medication. When iodine contrast agents are used for radiological examinations, the use of this medication should be discontinued for a certain period before and after the examination, and renal function must be assessed for recovery. Patients scheduled for surgery should discontinue this medication 48 hours prior to surgery and can resume it only after renal function has returned to normal post-surgery. Should there be a sudden onset of severe abdominal pain while taking this medication, acute pancreatitis may be the cause, and a doctor must be informed immediately. Additionally, if there are blisters or rashes on the skin, it may indicate bullous pemphigoid, and the medication should be stopped immediately and a doctor consulted. Long-term use of this medication can lower vitamin B12 levels; therefore, if symptoms of anemia or neurological issues arise, a blood test should be done. This medication should be swallowed whole and not chewed, crushed, or broken, although its outer coating may be expelled unchanged, which is normal. It is advisable not to use this medication during pregnancy or while breastfeeding, and to consult a doctor if planning to become pregnant. Elderly patients may have decreased renal function and therefore, dosage adjustments and regular kidney status checks are necessary. In cases of overdose, gastrointestinal disturbances or lactic acidosis may develop, necessitating an immediate visit to a medical facility, and blood dialysis may be required for drug removal. This medication must be kept out of reach of children and stored away from moisture.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication is sensitive to air and moisture, so it should be stored in a tightly sealed container. Keeping it at room temperature between 1 to 30 degrees Celsius will help maintain the effectiveness of the medication.
