View approved original text

This medication is prescribed to assist patients with type 2 diabetes in blood sugar control when linagliptin and metformin need to be used together. Taking this medication alongside dietary changes and exercise can significantly aid in blood sugar management. Therefore, it is used effectively for controlling blood sugar in type 2 diabetes treatment.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication is taken once daily with the evening meal. To maintain its sustained-release characteristics, it must be swallowed whole without splitting, crushing, grinding, or chewing. The 5/1000 mg sustained release tablet is taken once daily with 1 tablet per dose, whereas the 2.5/1000 mg sustained release tablet is taken once daily with 2 tablets at the same time. If not currently treated with metformin, the initial dosage is 5 mg of linagliptin and metformin hydrochloride.

Precautions

This medication helps to control blood sugar levels. However, it can rarely cause lactic acidosis, a dangerous condition due to the buildup of lactic acid in the body, so caution is required. It should not be used in individuals with allergies to this medication, type 1 diabetes, severe kidney dysfunction, liver dysfunction, acute infections, dehydration, or acute cardiac problems. Pregnant women or those with placental dysfunction should also avoid this medication. There is a risk of hypoglycemia when taking this medication, especially when used in combination with insulin or other antidiabetic agents, so blood sugar levels must be monitored closely. Patients with reduced kidney function should undergo regular kidney function tests, and this medication should not be used in cases of severe kidney impairment. Additionally, the medication should be temporarily discontinued before and after acute surgery or radiological examinations and can be resumed once kidney function has returned to normal. Rare side effects such as pancreatitis or skin blistering similar to pemphigus may occur, so if severe abdominal pain or skin abnormalities arise during treatment, the doctor should be informed immediately. Long-term use may lower vitamin B12 levels, so vitamin B12 testing should be done if symptoms of anemia or neurological abnormalities occur. This medication should be swallowed whole without breaking, chewing, or crushing. The outer shell of the tablet may appear in stool, which is normal. Additionally, this medication may interact with other drugs, so if other medications are being taken, it's essential to consult with a doctor or pharmacist. Elderly individuals are at higher risk of decreased kidney function, so appropriate dose adjustments and regular kidney function testing are necessary. Finally, overdosing on this medication may lead to serious side effects like lactic acidosis, so the prescribed dose must be strictly followed, and in case of overdose, immediate medical attention should be sought.
