This medication should be taken once daily with meals, preferably with the evening meal. To maintain its sustained release properties, this medication should be swallowed whole and not split or chewed. The sustained release formulation of this medication at 5/1000 mg is to be taken as one tablet once daily. Patients taking the 2.5/1000 mg sustained release formulation should take two tablets simultaneously once daily. The initial dosage is a total daily amount of linagliptin
This medicine helps to control blood sugar levels, and its main ingredients include linagliptin and metformin. This medication can rarely cause a serious condition called lactic acidosis, which can be dangerous due to excessive accumulation of lactic acid in the body, so caution is required. Especially in patients with severely reduced kidney function, severe liver dysfunction, acute infections or trauma, shock states, or acute myocardial infarction, this medication should not be used. Additionally, individuals allergic to the components of this medication, patients with type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, or acute alcohol intoxication should not use this medication. This medication can lead to hypoglycemia, so especially when used alongside sulfonylureas or insulin, careful monitoring of blood glucose changes is necessary, and dosage adjustments may be required. To reduce the risk of lactic acidosis, if dehydration, severe vomiting or diarrhea, or situations of rapidly worsening kidney function occur, you should immediately stop taking this medication and consult a doctor. During treatment, it is important to regularly monitor kidney function to ensure the medication is safely excreted. This medication should be temporarily discontinued when undergoing surgery or radiation tests involving iodine contrast agents and should be resumed only after kidney function has recovered. While taking this medication, side effects such as acute pancreatitis or blistering similar to pemphigus may occur, and if these symptoms arise, you should inform your doctor immediately. Long-term use may lead to vitamin B12 deficiency, so regular blood testing may be necessary. This medication should be swallowed whole without chewing, breaking, crushing, or splitting, and it is normal for the tablet coating to be excreted in the stool. It is advisable for pregnant or breastfeeding women not to use this medication, and especially if planning pregnancy, to consult a physician for safe treatment options. Elderly patients commonly experience reduced kidney function, so it is recommended to frequently check kidney function and treat with the minimum effective dose. There is no research on the effects of this medication on driving or operating machinery, but caution is needed as symptoms of hypoglycemia may occur. In case of overdose, the medication may not be properly absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract, and serious side effects such as lactic acidosis may occur; prompt medical treatment is necessary. Finally, this medication should be stored out of reach of children, in a dry place, and not transferred to other containers.
