Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
This medication assists patients with type 2 diabetes in managing blood sugar levels more effectively while simultaneously adhering to dietary adjustments and exercise therapy. Linagliptin and metformin work together to help stabilize blood glucose levels and support the overall management of diabetes in patients. Therefore, this medication is used to improve blood sugar control in diabetic patients.
This medication is taken once daily with the evening meal. To maintain its sustained-release properties, it should not be split, crushed, ground, or chewed but swallowed whole. The 5/1000 mg sustained-release tablet is taken as 1 tablet once daily. The 2.5/750 mg or 2.5/1000 mg sustained-release tablets should be taken as 2 tablets simultaneously once daily. The initial dosage consists of 5 mg of linagliptin and 1000 mg of metformin hydrochloride.
This medication helps regulate blood sugar. However, it can very rarely cause a condition known as lactic acidosis, which can be life-threatening, so caution is required. This medication should not be used in certain patients. For example, individuals allergic to its components, those with type 1 diabetes, patients with severe renal impairment, or those with acute illnesses or heart and liver dysfunction should not receive this treatment. Additionally, this medication may cause hypoglycemia; therefore, special care should be taken when used with other hypoglycemic agents such as insulin or sulfonylureas, and dosage adjustments may be required. Patients with impaired renal function should have their renal function tested periodically before taking this medication, and those with severely reduced renal function should not take it. During the treatment with this medication, rare side effects such as pancreatitis (acute pancreatitis) or rare skin conditions like bullous pemphigoid may occur, so immediate consultation with a doctor is necessary if symptoms like abdominal pain or skin abnormalities appear. The metformin component can lower vitamin B12 levels; thus, regular monitoring of vitamin B12 is advisable for those on long-term treatment. This medication should be swallowed whole without chewing or breaking it as the tablet shell may pass in stools, which is normal. Furthermore, this medication may interact with other drugs; thus, if you are taking other medications, you must inform your doctor or pharmacist. It is advisable for pregnant or nursing women not to use this medication, and insulin treatment is recommended in cases where there is a plan for pregnancy or confirmed pregnancy. Elderly patients often have impaired renal function; hence, renal function should be assessed before taking this medication, monitored regularly, and typically, the maximum dosage is not utilized. In case of an overdose, measures should be taken to prevent absorption of the medication from the gastrointestinal tract, and treatment should be sought immediately in the event of lactic acidosis. Lastly, this medication should be kept out of reach of children and stored away from moisture, and it is advisable not to transfer it to another container.
