Treatment of moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease
This medication is used for the treatment of moderate to severe Alzheimer's disease. It can help improve memory decline and cognitive function impairment in patients. It aids in daily functioning and can slow the progression of the disease. Continuous use can contribute to the improvement of the patient's quality of life.
This medication is taken orally once a day at the same time each day. If necessary, it may be administered twice daily. Dose escalation: Maximum daily dose is 20 mg, and it is increased by 5 mg weekly over the first three weeks. - First week (Days 1-7): 5 mg once daily - Second week (Days 8-14): 10 mg once daily - Third week (Days 15-21): 15 mg once daily
This medication should not be taken by individuals who are allergic to its components. It is also not safe for those with severely impaired liver function or serious kidney dysfunction. Caution is required for individuals with epilepsy or a history of seizures. Particularly, concomitant use of drugs affecting the NMDA receptor, such as amantadine, ketamine, or dextromethorphan, can aggravate side effects, so they should not be taken together. Attention is also needed in cases of changing urine acidity or specific urinary tract infections as these may affect the medication’s efficacy or side effects. Patients with unregulated heart diseases or hypertension should use this medication cautiously. Side effects such as dizziness, headache, constipation, drowsiness, and elevated blood pressure may occur, most of which are mild to moderate. Neurological side effects, such as confusion, hallucinations, or seizures, may rarely occur, and if symptoms arise, immediate consultation with medical personnel is necessary. This medication can interact with other drugs, and caution is required in particular when taking it with other NMDA receptor-affecting drugs, antipsychotics, or skeletal muscle relaxants. Pregnant women should only take this medication if absolutely necessary as safety for the fetus has not been established, and breastfeeding women are advised to discontinue breastfeeding as this medication may be excreted in breast milk. The safety and efficacy of this medication have not been confirmed in children or adolescents under 18 years. Overdose may result in central nervous system and gastrointestinal symptoms such as confusion, drowsiness, dizziness, and vomiting, and in such cases, appropriate treatment should be sought immediately. This medication may affect the patient’s response speed and concentration, so caution is needed when driving or operating machinery. It should be kept out of reach of children, and transferring it to another container may pose a risk of accidents or quality deterioration.
