Essential hypertension refers to a condition where blood pressure remains persistently high without a specific cause. This condition can impose a burden on the heart and blood vessels, increasing the risk of cardiovascular diseases. By treating essential hypertension, it is possible to maintain blood pressure within the normal range and reduce the risk of complications. This medication is used for essential hypertension.

Dosage and Administration

Adult dosage

The initial dose is 40 mg once daily, taken irrespective of meals. If blood pressure is not adequately controlled, the dosage may be increased up to 80 mg once daily. For elderly patients (65 years of age or older), no initial dose adjustment is necessary; however, for very elderly patients (75 years of age or older), consideration may be given to administering an initial dose of 20 mg. For mild to moderate renal impairment, no dosage adjustment is necessary; use in severe liver impairment patients is cautioned.

Precautions

This medication can cause serious harm to the fetus or newborn if taken during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy; therefore, it should be discontinued immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. Individuals allergic to the ingredients contained in this medication or pregnant women should not take it. Patients with diabetes or severe renal dysfunction should exercise caution as the concomitant use of this medication with certain drugs may be risky. Patients with significantly weakened heart or kidney function, patients with narrowed renal arteries, or patients with reduced blood volume should have their blood pressure and kidney function closely monitored when using this medication. There is a risk of excessively low blood pressure; thus, care should be taken for symptoms of hypotension, especially when first taking the medication. If such symptoms appear, the patient should lie down, rest, and contact medical services if necessary. This medication may increase potassium levels in the blood; therefore, if taken with potassium-sparing diuretics or potassium supplements, regular checks of potassium concentration in the blood should be conducted. There may be dizziness or drowsiness when driving or operating machinery, so caution is needed. Interactions with other medications may occur while using this medication; therefore, consultation with a physician or pharmacist is necessary, especially if taking lithium or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). It is recommended that breastfeeding women avoid this medication and consider alternative medications if breastfeeding must continue. Overdose may result in hypotension and dizziness; if these symptoms occur, immediate medical assistance should be sought since they cannot be removed by dialysis. Store this medication out of reach of children and keep it in its original packaging, protected from light and moisture.
