View approved original text

This medicine helps alleviate symptoms by adsorbing gases generated from diarrhea and atypical fermentation in the digestive tract. It is also used as an adsorbent in cases of poisoning due to drugs or chemicals, providing emergency detoxification. However, this activated charcoal does not effectively adsorb certain toxic substances such as cyanide, alcohol, hydrocarbon, lithium salts, corrosive sodium chloride, and heavy metals. Therefore, its effectiveness may be limited for specific poisons. Generally, it is used for symptom improvement in gastrointestinal discomfort and certain poisoning situations.

Dosage and Administration

Adult dosage

As activated charcoal, take 2 to 20 grams several times a day. Administer within 30 minutes of ingestion of the toxic substance in cases of acute poisoning. If the amount of toxic substance ingested is known, the recommended dose of activated charcoal is typically 5-10 times the amount of the ingested toxic substance. Adjust according to physician's directions based on age and symptoms.

Precautions

This medicine serves to protect the esophageal mucosa, but it should not be used if corrosive substances have been ingested. Diabetic patients should only use this medicine after diagnosis and prescription from a physician. It can affect the gastrointestinal system and may occasionally cause indigestion. Furthermore, long-term use may inhibit nutrient absorption due to the adsorption of vitamins and minerals, so caution is advised. When used as an oral detoxifying agent, it is recommended not to use it simultaneously with specific emetics. This medicine should be administered after gastric lavage or gastric suction, and within 2 hours of administration, it may diminish the effects of other medications, necessitating caution. Taking it together with foods like ice cream or sorbet may reduce its effectiveness, so it should be avoided. Do not be surprised if your stool turns black after taking this medicine. There is insufficient research on its safety during pregnancy or breastfeeding, so it should be used with caution. Keep out of reach of children, store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, and do not transfer to other containers to maintain the quality of the medicine.
