This medication is used in combination with empagliflozin and metformin to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes who have difficulty managing blood sugar with diet and exercise alone. It is also administered to type 2 diabetes patients with cardiovascular disease, and caution regarding cardiovascular event occurrence is necessary; please refer to clinical trial information from specialists.

How to take

Adult dose

The recommended dosage is 1 tablet, twice daily. It is determined based on the treatment regimen, efficacy, and tolerability of each patient, without exceeding the total daily limit of 25 mg of empagliflozin and 2000 mg of metformin. In cases where blood sugar control is inadequate with metformin alone or in combination with other medications such as insulin, a dosage of 5 mg of empagliflozin twice daily, along with the current dose of metformin, is recommended. If tolerability is good, adjustments may be considered.

Precautions

This medication can cause a rare side effect known as severe lactic acidosis, so it should not be used in patients with impaired kidney function or those with severe infections or dehydration. Care must be taken as there is a risk of hypoglycemia when taken with other diabetes medications. Kidney function should be regularly monitored to ensure it is normal, and the medication should be discontinued if kidney function worsens. Before and after tests using iodinated contrast agents, this medication should be temporarily discontinued and resumed only after confirming normal kidney function. It is safer to temporarily stop taking the medication when experiencing acute infections, surgery, or severe trauma. Pregnant women or those who may become pregnant, as well as breastfeeding women, should not take this medication. Elderly patients should be cautious as they are at risk for changes in body fluid levels and decreased kidney function and should have their kidney function regularly monitored. This medication may cause side effects such as gastrointestinal disturbances, hypoglycemia, urinary tract infections, genital infections, increased urination, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, constipation, liver function test abnormalities, hepatitis, alteration of taste, itching, rash, erythema, increased serum creatinine, decreased glomerular filtration rate, thirst, increased serum lipids, increased hematocrit, headache, dizziness, postural dizziness, drowsiness, fatigue, weakness, insomnia, fever, vascular stent stenosis, and stent thrombosis; hence, any unusual symptoms should prompt immediate consultation with a physician. Alcohol consumption can increase the risk of lactic acidosis, so avoid excessive drinking while taking this medication. During treatment, monitor your blood sugar levels regularly and notify healthcare professionals immediately if symptoms of hypoglycemia or lactic acidosis occur. Additionally, this medication may interact with other drugs, so be sure to inform medical personnel about any other medications you are taking.

Hives, severe swelling (angioedema), chest tightness, difficulty breathing, cold sweat, pallor, severe allergic reaction, severe rash with fever, blistering, skin peeling, pain in mouth/eyes, severe dermatological reactions, difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, asthma attacks, cough accompanied by fever, yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice), profound lethargy, liver abnormalities (jaundice), sudden and severe headaches.
