Control of blood sugar in type 2 diabetes and prevention of cardiovascular events
This medication is used to improve blood sugar control in adult patients with type 2 diabetes for whom a combination of empagliflozin and metformin is appropriate. It helps in controlling blood sugar when administered alongside diet and exercise. Special caution is needed for patients with type 2 diabetes who have cardiovascular disease and are not adequately controlling their blood sugar. For further information on the occurrence of cardiovascular events, please refer to professional clinical trial materials. This medication helps to effectively improve blood sugar management.
The recommended dose of this medication is 1 tablet, twice a day. It is determined based on the current treatment regimen, efficacy, and tolerability of each patient, not exceeding 25 mg of empagliflozin and 2000 mg of metformin. For patients for whom adequate blood sugar control cannot be achieved with metformin alone or using other drugs such as insulin, the recommended dosage is 5 mg of empagliflozin twice daily (10 mg total per day).
This medication is an anti-diabetic treatment that helps lower blood sugar, with the two components working together to aid in blood sugar control. Before use, renal function must be checked to ensure it is normal, and it should not be used in cases of severe renal impairment. Patients in acute conditions such as severe infections, dehydration, heart problems, or acute myocardial infarction should also avoid taking this medication. This medication is not to be administered to women who are pregnant or might become pregnant, or to breastfeeding mothers. This medication can cause hypoglycemia, so caution is advised regarding symptoms of low blood sugar when used with insulin or other blood glucose-lowering agents, and dosage adjustments may be necessary. Lactic acidosis, a serious side effect, can rarely occur, so if symptoms such as malaise, muscle pain, shortness of breath, or abdominal pain arise, it is essential to consult a doctor immediately. Additionally, urinary or genital infections may occur, so quick treatment is necessary if infection symptoms appear. In situations where there is concern about fluid loss or dehydration, blood pressure and hydration status should be monitored closely, particularly in the elderly or patients with cardiovascular disease. This medication should be discontinued for a period before and after undergoing surgery, and should also be temporarily stopped when receiving iodinated contrast tests. This medication may lower vitamin B12 levels, so regular blood tests are recommended. In case of overdose, there is a risk of lactic acidosis, and immediate medical treatment should be sought, as blood dialysis may be necessary. Safety and efficacy in children and adolescents under the age of 18 have not been established, so it is not recommended for this group. It is advisable to avoid alcohol consumption while taking this medication, and while no specific effects have been reported regarding driving or operating machinery, caution is still advised. This medication must be taken strictly under a physician's prescription and guidance, and any unusual symptoms should prompt an immediate consultation with a healthcare professional.
