This medicine helps improve symptoms of hypocalcemia, tetany, bone pain, and bone lesions that occur due to vitamin D metabolic disorders in chronic renal failure, hypoparathyroidism, vitamin D-resistant rickets, and osteomalacia. It is also used for diseases that involve weakened bones, such as osteoporosis.

How to take

Adult dose

Chronic renal failure and osteoporosis: Administer 0.5 to 1 ㎍ of Alfacalcidol orally once daily. Hypoparathyroidism and diseases due to other vitamin D metabolic disorders: Administer 1 to 4 ㎍ of this drug orally once daily.

Child dose

Osteoporosis: Administer 0.01 to 0.03 ㎍ per kg body weight of Alfacalcidol orally once daily. Other diseases: Administer 0.05 to 0.1 ㎍ per kg body weight of this drug orally once daily.

Precautions

This medication should not be taken by patients with abnormally high levels of calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium in the blood. It is important not to take magnesium-containing medications or vitamin D-related preparations, calcium-containing medications, and certain diuretics while taking this drug. Women who are breastfeeding should avoid taking this drug since its safety has not been established; if it must be taken, discontinuing breastfeeding is preferable. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should consult a doctor before taking this medicine, as it may harm the fetus.
