Precautions
This medication consists of two components, each with different precautions.
First, the sitagliptin component may rarely cause serious allergic reactions. Symptoms of such reactions may include difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or neck, and severe skin rashes. If such symptoms occur, immediately stop taking this medication and consult a doctor.
Additionally, sitagliptin may cause inflammation of the pancreas, so if abdominal pain, vomiting, or nausea occurs, seek medical attention promptly.
Second, the metformin component can cause a rare but potentially life-threatening condition known as lactic acidosis. This condition may present with symptoms such as muscle pain, difficulty breathing, lethargy, and abdominal pain; if such symptoms occur, immediately discontinue the medication and contact a medical facility.
This medication should not be administered to patients with severely impaired kidney function or those with serious infections, dehydration, or acute heart disease. Moreover, pregnant or nursing women should avoid its use.
During treatment, regular kidney function tests should be conducted, and elderly patients should be especially cautious as they are at higher risk for impaired kidney function.
Furthermore, taking this drug in conjunction with other diabetes medications or alcohol may increase the risk of hypoglycemia, thus blood sugar levels should be frequently monitored and dosage adjustments should be made as needed in consultation with a doctor.
Before undergoing surgery or imaging tests involving contrast agents, this medication should be temporarily discontinued, and it should only be resumed after confirming normal kidney function following the tests.
Side effects such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, headache, upper respiratory infection, may occur during treatment. If any symptoms are severe or persistent, consult a physician.
Lastly, if any unusual symptoms such as rapid weight loss, loss of appetite, skin rashes, joint pain, or blistering skin disorders occur during treatment, promptly inform healthcare personnel.
