Precautions

This drug is used for the treatment of diabetes and should not be used in patients with poor kidney function or certain health conditions. This medication can rarely cause a serious metabolic complication called lactic acidosis, so patients with decreased kidney function or liver dysfunction should be particularly cautious. Use with other diabetes medications, such as insulin or sulfonylureas, may result in hypoglycemic symptoms, so blood sugar levels should be closely monitored when used in combination. Before and after surgery or diagnostic tests that use radiocontrast agents, the use of this drug should be temporarily discontinued, and it should be resumed only after verifying normal kidney function. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take this medication, and if planning a pregnancy, should consult with a doctor. Elderly patients or those with reduced fluid volume or states of dehydration or severe infection should have their kidney function and blood pressure monitored regularly before and after taking this drug. Genital and urinary tract infections may occur during treatment, so if any related symptoms appear, healthcare professionals should be informed immediately. Vitamin B12 levels may decrease; therefore, it is advisable to monitor vitamin B12 concentrations during long-term use. Excessive alcohol consumption may exacerbate the side effects of this drug and should be avoided, and care is required when used with other medications that may affect blood sugar control. This drug may have a weight loss effect; however, symptoms such as hypoglycemia or dehydration may occur, so consulting a doctor immediately if symptoms arise is necessary. Dizziness or hypotension may occur during treatment, caution is advised when driving or operating machinery. This drug should be kept out of reach of children and stored in its original container to prevent misuse or deterioration in quality.
