Good blood sugar management can help reduce the risk of complications associated with diabetes. Therefore, this medication is used to improve blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes.

How to take

Adult dose

This medication is typically taken twice daily with food, and the dosage should be gradually increased to reduce gastrointestinal side effects associated with metformin. 1. For patients not currently receiving metformin: - The initial dose is 50/500 mg, taking 1 tablet twice daily, and may be increased to 50/1000 mg, 1 tablet twice daily. 2. For patients currently receiving metformin: - The initial recommended dose of this medication is 50 mg of sitagliptin, taken twice daily (total of 100 mg per day) alongside the current metformin dosage.

Precautions

This medication contains sitagliptin and metformin, and there are some important precautions when taking it. First, allergic reactions may occur while taking this medication, so if symptoms such as rash, hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face or neck occur, you should immediately stop taking it and consult a doctor. Additionally, serious side effects such as pancreatitis which involves inflammation of the pancreas have been reported. If symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or fever occur, inform your healthcare provider immediately. This medication should not be administered to patients with impaired kidney function, acute infections, dehydration, or serious heart disease, and especially patients with decreased kidney function should have regular kidney function tests due to the risk of rare and fatal side effects such as lactic acidosis. Lactic acidosis may manifest with symptoms like muscle pain, difficulty breathing, lethargy, and abdominal pain, so if such symptoms occur, you should immediately visit a hospital. This medication can cause hypoglycemia, and the risk is particularly increased when taken with other blood sugar-lowering agents or insulin, so you should frequently check blood sugar levels and be aware of hypoglycemic symptoms. Alcohol consumption or excessive alcohol intake increases the risk of lactic acidosis, so it should be avoided while taking this medication. If undergoing surgery, you should stop taking this medication 48 hours before the surgery and resume only after normal kidney function has been confirmed post-surgery. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, as well as women who are nursing, should not take this medication. Safety and efficacy in children have not been established, so it should not be used in children. Regular blood tests and kidney function tests should be conducted during the use of this medication, and it is also advisable to periodically check vitamin B12 levels. Finally, this medication may interact with other drugs, so if you are taking any other medications, you must inform your doctor or pharmacist.

Hives, severe swelling (angioedema), chest tightness, difficulty breathing, anaphylaxis, angioedema, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, severe rash with high fever, blisters, skin peeling, painful mucosal lesions in the mouth/eyes, severe skin reactions, acute pancreatitis, difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, asthma attacks, respiratory distress accompanied by cough and fever, yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), extreme lethargy, liver abnormalities (jaundice).

Mild side effects

Diarrhea, upper respiratory infection, headache, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, nasopharyngitis, constipation, muscle pain, limb pain, back pain, pruritus, thrombocytopenia, rhabdomyolysis, itching, dizziness, decreased appetite, gastrointestinal disturbances, hypoglycemia, joint pain with severe and disabling conditions.

Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.

This medication should be stored in a tightly sealed container to prevent air entry, at room temperature between 1 and 30 degrees Celsius. Proper storage will help maintain the drug's efficacy and prevent degradation.
