This medication helps effectively lower blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension. It is also used in patients aged 55 and older, at high risk of cardiovascular disease, especially those with a history of coronary artery disease or stroke, or those with high-risk diabetes, to reduce the risks of myocardial infarction, stroke, and mortality due to cardiovascular disease. Through these effects, it protects patients' cardiovascular health and reduces overall risk.

How to take

Adult dose

Telmisartan is administered orally once daily at a dose of 40 mg with water, irrespective of meals. In some patients, a dose of 20 mg once daily may also be effective, and if necessary, the dose may be increased up to 80 mg once daily. The maximum blood pressure-lowering effect appears 4 to 8 weeks after treatment initiation. For reduction of cardiovascular risk, it is recommended to take 80 mg once daily with water.

Precautions

This medication can cause serious harm, particularly to the fetus and newborns, during pregnancy, so it must be discontinued immediately if pregnancy is confirmed. It should not be used by individuals with allergies to this drug, by pregnant or breastfeeding women, by patients with severe liver impairment, by individuals with specific angioedema, and by patients with diabetes or severe renal impairment. Special precautions should be taken when administering this drug to elderly patients, patients with hyperkalemia, liver disease, valvular heart disease, ischemic heart disease, or other special health conditions. Various adverse reactions such as blood pressure drop, hyperkalemia, renal impairment, angioedema, and liver function abnormalities may occur during treatment, so symptoms should be monitored carefully. Particularly, if symptoms such as a sudden drop in blood pressure or difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or lips occur, medical assistance should be sought immediately. It is important to regularly check potassium and creatinine levels in patients with reduced kidney function when administering this drug. In cases of reduced blood volume or sodium depletion, the risk of hypotension increases, so these conditions should be corrected in advance. Caution is advised when taking this drug with other antihypertensives, specific diuretics, lithium, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, etc., and consultation with healthcare professionals is recommended. Women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant should not use this drug, and breastfeeding women should also preferably avoid taking it. It is not recommended for children under 18 years old as safety and effectiveness have not been established. In the case of overdose, symptoms such as hypotension, dizziness, acute renal failure may occur, and immediate medical treatment is required. Keep this medication out of reach of children and ensure it remains sealed until use. Caution is needed when driving or operating machinery as it may cause fainting or dizziness.
