Efficacy & effects

  • Hypertriglyceridemia
  • hypercholesterolemia
  • elevated triglyceride levels
View approved original text

This medication is used as an adjunct to decrease elevated triglyceride levels in patients with endogenous hypertriglyceridemia. It is effective for hypertriglyceridemia (type IV) when used alone, and can be used in combination with statins for the combined type of hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglyceridemia (type IIb). It can enhance effectiveness, especially in patients whose triglyceride levels are not controlled, when used along with statins. This medication is useful in improving blood lipid levels and assisting in the management of dyslipidemia, thereby playing an important role in the treatment of hyperlipidemia.

Precautions

This medication should not be used by individuals with an allergy to its components or children under 18 years of age. Patients with a high risk of bleeding, such as those with severe trauma or surgery, patients with poor liver function, and patients with fish allergies should exercise special caution when using this medication. Various side effects such as dyspepsia, belching, headache, dizziness, rash, cold symptoms, and myalgia may occur, so patients should consult a doctor if any unusual symptoms arise. Before starting treatment, it is crucial to check the serum triglyceride levels through a blood test and to adhere to a dietary regimen and exercise. During this medication, regular blood tests should be conducted to monitor triglyceride levels and liver function; if there is no therapeutic effect, the medication should be discontinued. This medication can affect blood coagulation, so patients taking anticoagulants should frequently check their blood test results under medical guidance to reduce bleeding risk. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should consult a doctor for careful consideration due to a lack of safety information regarding this medication. Elderly patients can also use this medication, but caution is advised due to the potential for age-related side effects. In the case of overdose, there is no specific antidote, so appropriate treatment should be administered based on symptoms. This medication is not recommended for children, as safety and effectiveness have not been established. While this medication is considered to have a low risk of carcinogenicity, mutagenicity, and reproductive toxicity, careful consideration should be given to its effects on the fetus during pregnancy.
