Prevention of gastric and duodenal ulcers (antacid effect, symptom improvement) and gout attacks
This medication helps improve acidosis and relieve symptoms through its antacid effect in disorders such as gastric and duodenal ulcers, gastritis, and excessive stomach acid. It is also used to promote uric acid excretion to prevent gout attacks. Therefore, this drug can be used for gastrointestinal disorders and gout management.
Administer 0.5 to 1 g of sodium bicarbonate per dose, and take 3 to 5 g per day orally. Adjust as appropriate for age and symptoms.
This medication contains sodium, so it should not be used in patients who need to restrict sodium intake. For example, administration should be avoided in patients with hypernatremia, edema, gestational hypertension, bladder stones, and hypertension. Additionally, this medication contains lactose and should not be used in patients with genetic issues such as lactose intolerance, lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption. Care should be taken when administering this medication to patients with severe gastrointestinal ulcers, reduced kidney function, heart or lung issues, and electrolyte imbalances. During the use of this medication, monitor closely for symptoms of alkalosis or sodium accumulation that may cause edema; if abnormalities occur, reduce or discontinue the dosage. Gastrointestinal effects may include gastric distension or belching and, rarely, excessive stomach acid secretion. Particular care should be taken in cases of congestive heart failure, edema, significant sodium retention, and in patients with little to no urine output. When experiencing excessive stomach acid, it is advisable to take the medication on an empty stomach before meals and to use it with other antacids to reduce carbonation irritation. With long-term use, there is a risk of developing alkalosis. This medication can increase the acidity of gastric fluids, affecting the absorption or excretion of other drugs, so be cautious of interactions with concomitant medications. Furthermore, if a large amount of milk or calcium supplements is consumed, milk-alkali syndrome may occur, so symptoms should be closely monitored and, if abnormalities arise, discontinue use.
Edema (swelling) may indicate severe swelling or urinary abnormalities, requiring caution.
Alkalosis, edema due to sodium accumulation (swelling), gastric distension, belching, and rebound secretion of stomach acid may occur.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
Store this medication in a tightly closed container to protect it from air and moisture. It is important to maintain a storage temperature between 1 and 30 degrees Celsius.
