Precautions

This medication should not be used in certain patients. First, individuals allergic to this drug or other piroxicam formulations should avoid administration. Additionally, those with a history of asthma attacks due to aspirin asthma, or those who have had symptoms like hives, rhinitis, or facial swelling due to aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs should not use it. It is also not administered to children under 14 years of age. Patients with bronchial asthma or those allergic to propylene glycol, an ingredient in this medication, should be particularly cautious when using it. While using this medication, symptoms such as itching, redness, rash, eczema, contact dermatitis, erythema may occur on the skin, and rarely photosensitivity may develop. If these symptoms worsen, use should be immediately discontinued. Furthermore, prolonged use or overdose may result in serious side effects such as nausea, gastrointestinal discomfort, shortness of breath, renal dysfunction, and acute interstitial nephritis. It is important to remember that this medication helps alleviate symptoms but is not a treatment for the underlying cause. Using this medication in the presence of skin infections may mask infection symptoms; therefore, it should be used with antimicrobial or antifungal agents in cases of inflammation accompanied by infection, with careful monitoring of the condition. When used for chronic conditions, other therapeutic options should also be considered alongside drug treatment, and the patient’s condition should be closely monitored for potential side effects. This medication should especially not be used during the last three months of pregnancy, as it may pose risks such as prolonged labor, severe bleeding, neonatal cardiopulmonary issues, and renal dysfunction. While animal studies have indicated no harm to the fetus during early to mid-pregnancy, caution is advised due to insufficient studies on humans. Moreover, since this medication is excreted in breast milk, it is advisable for nursing mothers not to use it. It is recommended to avoid use in premature infants, newborns, infants, and children, as safety has not been established. In elderly patients, side effects may be more pronounced, hence it should be used cautiously in the minimum effective dose necessary. Lastly, this medication should not be applied to wounds, burns, infected skin, or on the eyes and mucous membranes, and should not be used with occlusive dressing.
