How to take

Adult dose

This medication is administered twice a day with meals. 1. For those new to metformin therapy: Start with this medication in the dosage of 2.5/500 mg, taking one tablet twice daily, and can be increased up to 2.5/1000 mg twice daily. 2. For those having difficulty controlling blood sugar with metformin alone: Administer linagliptin 2.5 mg twice daily and the existing dosage of metformin.

Precautions

This medication aids in blood sugar control. However, it can cause a rare side effect called lactic acidosis, which must be approached with utmost caution. Lactic acidosis occurs when there is an excessive accumulation of lactic acid in the body, which can lead to serious conditions; therefore, it is safer for individuals with poor kidney function or those with heart disease or liver dysfunction not to take this medication. Additionally, those with known allergies to any components of this medication, type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, severe renal impairment, or acute conditions such as infections or trauma should not use this medication. Pregnant or breastfeeding women are also advised against using this medication. This medication poses a risk of hypoglycemia; therefore, when taken with other hypoglycemic agents such as insulin or sulfonylureas, blood glucose levels should be monitored closely. It is also important to regularly test kidney function for abnormalities, and elderly patients should be especially cautious as decreased kidney function is common in this group. If sudden abdominal pain, persistent muscle weakness, or difficulty breathing occurs while taking this medication, consult a doctor immediately. Rare skin diseases such as acute pancreatitis or blistering similar to pemphigus should also be reported immediately if symptoms arise. Moreover, this medication may reduce vitamin B12 levels; hence, it is advisable to regularly check vitamin B12 levels if used for prolonged periods. Alcohol consumption may increase the risk of lactic acidosis, thus it's best avoided. This medication can interact with other drugs, so patients must inform their doctors or pharmacists of any other medications they are taking. Caution is particularly necessary when taken with drugs that may affect kidney function or glycemia. Lastly, this medication is not recommended for use in children or in those under 10 years old, and research on its effects on driving or operating machinery is insufficient, so caution is warranted. Keep the medication out of reach of children and avoid humid places during storage.
