View approved original text

Emergency contraceptive is used to prevent unwanted pregnancy by taking it immediately after unprotected intercourse or contraceptive failure within 120 hours (5 days). This drug acts quickly to reduce the possibility of pregnancy, so it is most effective when taken as soon as possible.

How to take

Adult dose

Take 1 tablet of this medicine as soon as possible after unprotected sexual intercourse or contraceptive failure, and no later than 120 hours (5 days) afterward. If vomiting occurs within 3 hours of taking the medicine, take another tablet of this medicine immediately. It may be taken with or without food and at any time during the menstrual cycle.

Precautions

This drug should only be used temporarily as an emergency contraceptive and should not replace regular contraceptive methods. Even if this drug is taken, it does not prevent all pregnancies, so if unusual bleeding occurs on the expected menstrual date or if menstruation has not occurred for more than 7 days after the expected date, a pregnancy test must be done to confirm the possibility of pregnancy. This drug should not be taken by those who are pregnant, allergic to the active ingredient, or have certain hereditary lactase deficiency disorders. Individuals at risk of ectopic pregnancy should consult a doctor immediately if abdominal pain occurs after taking this medication and continue to monitor the pregnancy status. Care should also be taken when using this drug in cases of severe asthma or significant liver disease. Various minor side effects can occur after taking this drug, including headache, nausea, abdominal pain, fatigue, skin rash, and menstrual irregularities. Menstruation usually starts on schedule, but it may start earlier or be delayed after taking this drug, so caution is advised. This drug should be used only once a month, and safety and effectiveness cannot be guaranteed with repeated usage. After taking this drug, non-hormonal contraceptive methods such as condoms or spermicides must be used until the next menstrual period starts. Once 120 hours after intercourse have passed, this drug is ineffective and should not be taken afterwards. This drug does not prevent HIV or other sexually transmitted infections, so separate protective measures should be taken for infection prevention. Taking this drug with certain other medications may decrease its effectiveness or increase side effects, so if other medications are being taken, it is essential to consult a doctor or pharmacist. Women who are pregnant or may be pregnant should not use this drug, and breastfeeding women are advised to refrain from breastfeeding for at least one week after taking it. Experience with the use of this drug in children and adolescents is limited, so it must be used after consultation with a specialist in this age group. No serious side effects have been reported in cases of overdose, but if suspected, medical attention should be sought immediately. This drug should be kept out of the reach of children, stored in a tightly closed container to protect from air and moisture, and kept in its original packaging away from direct sunlight.
