Precautions

This medication is helpful for controlling blood sugar. However, there are several precautions to consider when using this medication. First, this medication can very rarely trigger a serious condition known as lactic acidosis. Lactic acidosis is a dangerous condition that occurs when there is an excessive buildup of lactic acid in the body, which can be life-threatening if left untreated. Therefore, it is safest for individuals with poor kidney function or those with heart or liver diseases to avoid taking this medication. Additionally, there is an increased risk of hypoglycemia when this medication is used with other diabetes medications, so blood sugar levels should be carefully monitored. Should symptoms of hypoglycemia occur, sugar-containing foods should be consumed immediately. This medication is contraindicated in patients with impaired renal function, severe infections or trauma, upcoming surgeries, liver dysfunction, and in women who are pregnant or may become pregnant. While on this medication, regular kidney function and blood tests should be done, and vitamin B12 levels should be checked periodically, as there is a risk of vitamin B12 deficiency. Moreover, alcohol consumption should be avoided during treatment, especially in cases of acute alcohol intoxication or poor nutritional status. If sudden abdominal pain, vomiting, difficulty breathing, muscle pain, or fatigue occur during treatment, medical personnel should be notified immediately, as these may be signs of serious side effects such as lactic acidosis or pancreatitis. During treatment, one should exercise caution while driving or operating hazardous machinery, as symptoms of hypoglycemia or dizziness may occur. Lastly, this medication should be used cautiously in children and the elderly, with frequent monitoring of kidney function in older patients. In cases of overdose, immediate medical attention should be sought. When using this medication, it is important to be well-informed of the above precautions and to consult with a doctor or pharmacist for safe use.
