Efficacy & effects

Prevention of pregnancy as emergency contraception within 120 hours (5 days) after sexual intercourse

View approved original text

Emergency contraceptives are used to prevent unintended pregnancy by taking them immediately after unprotected intercourse or contraceptive failure within 120 hours, or 5 days. This medication works quickly to lower the chances of pregnancy and can effectively provide assistance in urgent situations. It is important to take emergency contraceptives promptly to prevent an unplanned pregnancy. This medication is not a regular contraceptive method, so it is necessary to maintain consistent contraceptive methods during normal circumstances. Emergency contraceptives play an important role in preventing pregnancy and help to protect women's health.

How to take

Adult dose

Take 1 tablet of this medicine as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse or contraceptive failure, and no later than 120 hours (5 days). If vomiting occurs within 3 hours after taking the dose, take another tablet of this medicine immediately. It may be taken regardless of meals and at any time during the menstrual cycle.

Precautions

This medication is a temporary emergency contraceptive. It should not be used as a substitute for regular contraceptive methods. Even after taking this medication, it cannot prevent pregnancy in all cases, so if abnormal bleeding occurs on the expected menstrual date, or if menstruation is not present for more than 7 days after the due date or symptoms of pregnancy appear, a pregnancy test must be done. Do not take this medication if you are pregnant or allergic to its components or excipients. Additionally, those with lactose intolerance or certain genetic metabolic disorders should also avoid taking it. If there is a risk of ectopic pregnancy and abdominal pain occurs after taking this medication, further tests are needed to consider the possibility of ectopic pregnancy. Those with severe asthma or liver impairment should use caution. While taking this medication, various mild side effects such as headaches, nausea, abdominal pain, fatigue, and skin rashes may occur, but most recover after some time. The menstrual cycle may be slightly advanced or delayed, and some women may experience bleeding between periods. Repeating use more than once a month is not recommended. This medication may reduce the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives, so if intercourse occurs after taking this medication, non-hormonal contraceptive methods such as condoms or spermicides must be used until the start of the next menstrual period. This medication is ineffective if taken more than 120 hours post-intercourse. This medication does not prevent HIV or other sexually transmitted infections, so caution is required. When taken with other medications, interactions may occur. Particularly, taking medications that induce or inhibit certain liver enzymes can decrease or increase the effectiveness of this medication, so consult with a doctor or pharmacist. Do not use this medication if you are pregnant or suspect pregnancy; if breastfeeding, it is recommended to avoid breastfeeding for at least one week after taking this medication. Safety for children and adolescents has not been adequately established, so caution is required. No serious side effects have been reported with overdose, but if overdose is suspected, seek medical attention immediately. This medication should be stored out of reach of children, and kept in its original packaging to protect from light; do not transfer to another container.
