How to take

Adult dose

The 100/1000 mg extended-release tablets should be taken once daily, with one tablet per dose. Patients taking the 50/500 mg extended-release tablets or the 50/1000 mg extended-release tablets should take two tablets simultaneously once daily. To maintain the extended-release properties, the tablets should be swallowed whole; they should not be split, crushed, ground, or chewed. This medication is recommended to be taken at dinner time once daily, to reduce gastrointestinal side effects from metformin, and doses should be gradually increased.

Precautions

This medication consists of two components: sitagliptin and metformin. Sitagliptin can cause allergic reactions, so if symptoms such as skin rash or difficulty breathing occur, use should be stopped immediately. Additionally, rare instances of severe inflammation of the pancreas, known as pancreatitis, may occur, therefore symptoms such as abdominal pain or vomiting should be carefully monitored. Metformin can cause a rare but fatal metabolic disturbance known as lactic acidosis. Symptoms may include difficulty breathing, muscle pain, fatigue, and abdominal pain, so if these symptoms occur, medical personnel should be notified immediately. This medication should not be administered to patients with moderately severe kidney dysfunction or those with specific conditions such as acute heart disease or severe infections. It is also not recommended for use in pregnant or breastfeeding women, and children under 18 years of age. During the course of treatment, regular monitoring of kidney function and blood tests to confirm safety is necessary, and vitamin B12 levels should also be checked. It is important to avoid alcohol when taking this medication, especially excessive acute or chronic alcohol consumption, which can be dangerous. Patients may need to discontinue this medication for a period of time before and after surgery and should resume only when diet returns to normal and kidney function is restored. When used in combination with other blood sugar lowering agents, the risk of hypoglycemia may increase, so signs of hypoglycemia should be monitored, and doses of other medications should be adjusted if necessary. Finally, if any unusual symptoms occur while taking this medication, it is crucial to consult with medical personnel for appropriate action.
