Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
This medication helps patients with type 2 diabetes achieve better blood sugar control in conjunction with dietary and exercise therapies. The combination of sitagliptin and metformin improves blood glucose levels to help maintain health. Therefore, it is used for improving blood sugar management.
The dosage of this medication should not exceed sitagliptin 100 mg and metformin 2000 mg per day. This medication should be taken once daily, preferably in the evening, and the dosage should be gradually increased. The extended-release tablet should be swallowed whole without splitting, crushing, grinding, or chewing. For the 100/1000 mg extended-release tablet, take one tablet once daily. For the 50/500 mg or 50/1000 mg extended-release tablets, one should take two tablets once daily.
This medication contains both sitagliptin and metformin and is primarily used for blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes. While taking this medication, serious allergic reactions may occur; if symptoms such as skin rash, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face or neck appear, discontinue use immediately and consult a doctor. Serious side effects including pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) have been reported, so if symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or loss of appetite occur, notify healthcare personnel immediately. Metformin is known to rarely cause a life-threatening metabolic disorder called lactic acidosis, thus, this medication should not be taken in cases of severe dehydration, heart disease, or acute infections. Patients with moderate or severe renal impairment, those with acute heart failure or sepsis, and women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take this medication. This medication poses a risk of hypoglycemia, so caution should be exercised if meals are skipped, irregular eating habits occur, or excessive exercise is performed. Particularly when taken with insulin or sulfonylurea drugs, special attention should be paid to hypoglycemic symptoms. Gastrointestinal side effects such as diarrhea, nausea, and abdominal pain may occur, so consult a doctor if symptoms are severe. Regular monitoring of kidney function and blood tests to check liver and kidney status is important while taking this medication, and vitamin B12 levels should also be monitored periodically. Excessive alcohol consumption may increase the risk of lactic acidosis, so alcohol should be avoided during treatment. If undergoing surgery or tests requiring contrast agents, this medication should be temporarily discontinued before and after the tests, and resumed only after kidney function has returned to normal. Elderly patients may be at higher risk of decreased kidney function, thus, dose adjustments and regular monitoring are necessary. If overdose is suspected, visit a hospital immediately to receive appropriate treatment, as this medication can be partially removed by hemodialysis. While taking this medication, it is important to regularly check blood sugar levels and carefully monitor the effects and side effects of the medication.
