Precautions

This medication contains sitagliptin and metformin and is used for diabetes treatment. First, due to the sitagliptin component, serious allergic reactions may occur; if symptoms such as rash, hives, or difficulty breathing appear, discontinue use immediately and consult a physician. Additionally, there is a rare but serious side effect of acute pancreatitis, which involves inflammation of the pancreas; if symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, or severe stomach discomfort occur, inform medical personnel immediately. The metformin component, though rare, can cause a serious metabolic disorder known as lactic acidosis, which may present symptoms such as muscle pain, fatigue, difficulty breathing, or abdominal pain, thus caution is warranted. This medication is not to be administered in patients with significantly reduced kidney function, severe liver disease, acute cardiac conditions, or severe infections. Also, if receiving iodinated contrast agents for radiologic examinations, this medication should be discontinued for a certain period before and after the examination, and one should resume taking it only after confirming normal kidney function. This medication is not intended for use in pregnant or nursing women or children under 18 years of age. While taking this medication, maintaining regular meals and exercise is essential, and since hypoglycemia symptoms may occur, it is advisable to prepare sugar or glucose. Particularly, when taken together with insulin or other hypoglycemic agents, the risk of hypoglycemia increases; therefore, one should be aware of symptoms and may need to adjust medication dosage accordingly. Regular checks of kidney function, blood tests, and vitamin B12 levels are essential to ensure there are no abnormalities. Alcohol consumption can increase the risk of lactic acidosis, so it is advised to refrain from excessive drinking during the treatment. In case of surgery, this medication should be discontinued 48 hours prior to the surgery and resumed only after confirming that kidney function is normal post-operation. Lastly, if symptoms such as skin blisters or severe joint pain occur during the course of medication, one should consult a physician immediately for treatment.
