Precautions

This medication contains sitagliptin and metformin hydrochloride, and is mainly used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. First, while taking this medication, severe allergic reactions may occur. If symptoms such as skin rash, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face or neck appear, immediately stop taking the medication and consult a healthcare provider. Additionally, this medication can cause severe inflammation of the pancreas known as pancreatitis, so if symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, or fever occur, visit a hospital immediately. The metformin hydrochloride contained in this medication can cause lactic acidosis, which is a rare but life-threatening side effect; if sudden fatigue, muscle pain, difficulty breathing, or abdominal pain occurs, immediately stop taking the medication and seek emergency treatment. This drug should not be administered to patients with moderate to severe renal impairment, acute heart failure, serious infections, dehydration, or acute myocardial infarction. Before and after tests using iodinated contrast agents, there is a risk of renal function deterioration and lactic acidosis. Therefore, the intake of this medication should be stopped at least 48 hours before testing and restarted only after normal renal function is confirmed. This medication is not to be used by women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, or by nursing mothers. This medication can cause hypoglycemia; therefore, caution is required if meals are skipped, irregular eating habits are present, or if engaging in vigorous exercise. The risk of hypoglycemia may increase when used with other blood sugar-lowering medications, so blood sugar levels should be monitored carefully. During treatment, regular checks of renal function and blood tests should be conducted to detect any abnormalities, and vitamin B12 levels may need to be supplemented if they drop. Excessive alcohol consumption should be avoided while taking this medication, and when undergoing surgery or in cases of severe illness, it should be temporarily discontinued in consultation with a healthcare provider. Finally, this medication has not been established as safe and effective for use in children and adolescents under 18 years of age, and dose adjustments and caution are required for the elderly due to decreased renal function.
