Precautions

This medication contains two components, sitagliptin and metformin, primarily used for blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes. Firstly, sitagliptin can cause rare but serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, angioedema, and Stevens-Johnson syndrome, which can severely damage the skin. If any of these symptoms occur, immediately discontinue the medication and consult a physician. Additionally, sitagliptin can cause inflammation of the pancreas, known as acute pancreatitis, so if symptoms such as abdominal pain or vomiting occur, notify medical staff immediately. Metformin can cause lactate acidosis, a rare but life-threatening metabolic complication. Lactate acidosis occurs when there is excessive buildup of lactate in the body, leading to acidosis, with symptoms including malaise, muscle pain, difficulty breathing, and abdominal pain. If these symptoms appear, immediately discontinue medication and go to a hospital. This medication is not to be administered to patients with significantly decreased kidney function, dehydration, severe infections, heart failure, acute myocardial infarction, sepsis, or other serious health conditions. Furthermore, the administration of this medication should be temporarily halted before and after examinations using radiopaque agents, and should only be resumed once kidney function is confirmed to be normal. Pregnant women, women who may become pregnant, nursing mothers, and children under 18 years old should not use this medication. During treatment, symptoms of hypoglycemia may occur, so particularly when used with other antidiabetic medications such as insulin or sulfonylureas, careful monitoring of blood sugar changes is essential. This medication may pose risks for patients with impaired liver function or those who consume excessive alcohol; therefore, caution is needed. Regular check-ups for kidney function and blood tests are necessary during treatment, and Vitamin B12 levels should also be monitored periodically. Patients scheduled for surgery should suspend the medication 48 hours before the procedure, and resume it only after confirming that kidney function has returned to normal post-surgery. Finally, any unusual symptoms such as sudden skin rashes, blisters, severe joint pain, or muscle pain should be reported to a physician immediately.
