This medication is taken twice a day with meals. 1. Precautions

This medication can cause a rare but very serious side effect known as lactic acidosis, which requires careful attention. The risk of lactic acidosis is higher when there is a rapid decline in kidney function or issues with heart or lung function. This medication should not be administered to certain patients, such as those who are allergic to its components, those with type 1 diabetes, lactic acidosis, severe renal impairment, acute infections, heart failure, liver dysfunction, acute alcohol intoxication, or during pregnancy. Additionally, there is a risk of hypoglycemia, so blood sugar levels should be closely monitored when taken with hypoglycemic agents like sulfonylureas or insulin. Excessive exercise, inadequate meals, and alcohol consumption may also increase the risk of hypoglycemia. Patients with weakened kidney function or the elderly should undergo regular kidney function tests before and during the use of this medication, and it should not be used if kidney function declines significantly. Patients with unstable heart function or acute heart failure should use this medication with caution, and it should be temporarily stopped before and after the administration of iodine contrast used in radiological examinations. While taking this medication, skin conditions such as acute pancreatitis or bullous pemphigoid may occur; therefore, if severe abdominal pain or blisters on the skin arise, notify a doctor immediately. Long-term use may result in vitamin B12 deficiency; hence, if symptoms of anemia or neurological issues develop, vitamin B12 levels should be checked and supplementation may be necessary. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should avoid this medication, and it is not recommended for children under 10 years old or adolescents. This medication may interact with other drugs; therefore, caution is warranted, especially when taken with drugs that affect renal function, hypoglycemic agents, or alcohol. In case of overdose, there is an increased risk of lactic acidosis, and immediate medical treatment should be sought, which may include blood dialysis. Store this medication out of the reach of children, avoid moisture, and it is advisable not to transfer it to another container.
