This medication is used in conjunction with dietary and exercise therapy to help control blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes. It aids in blood glucose management whether used alone or in combination with other medications. This helps to stabilize blood glucose levels for patients with diabetes.

How to take

Adult dose

The recommended dosage for this medication when used alone or in combination is 20 mg once daily. It can be taken regardless of meals.

Precautions

This medication should not be used by individuals with allergic reactions to the active ingredient or other components. Insulin treatment is required for patients with diabetic ketoacidosis, comatose states, or type 1 diabetes, making this medication inappropriate. It is advisable not to use this medication for patients with severe infections, pre- or post-surgery, or severe injuries as they may also require insulin treatment. Caution should be exercised when administering this medication to patients with severe liver dysfunction, as there is limited experience with its use in these patients. For patients with mild to moderate heart failure, it should be used cautiously while it is not recommended for those with severe heart failure. Caution is needed for patients taking sulfonylureas or insulin due to the risk of hypoglycemia. Patients with high risk of hypoglycemia such as those with pituitary or adrenal insufficiency, nutritional deficiencies, irregular meals, intense exercise, or excessive alcohol consumption should also be used with caution. Caution is warranted for those with a history of abdominal surgery or bowel obstruction due to the risk of gastrointestinal side effects. Patients with cardiac arrhythmias or a tendency to prolonged QT intervals should avoid this medication due to the risk of side effects during use. Symptoms of acute pancreatitis may occur, so patients experiencing severe abdominal pain or vomiting should promptly inform medical personnel. Various side effects including hypoglycemia, constipation, liver function abnormalities, interstitial lung disease, skin rash, and acute pancreatitis may occur, so patients should consult a physician immediately if any abnormal symptoms arise. Particularly, when taken with other diabetes medications, the risk of hypoglycemia may increase, so careful monitoring of blood glucose status is essential. If symptoms of hypoglycemia occur, appropriate measures such as consuming sugar-containing food should be taken. This medication is not recommended for use during pregnancy and should be used cautiously during breastfeeding. Safety in pediatrics has not been established, hence it is advisable not to use in children. Elderly patients should be monitored closely for their physical condition, as body functions may be impaired. In the event of overdose, general treatment along with supportive measures tailored to the patient's condition is required. This medication should be kept out of reach of children, and transferring it to other containers should be avoided. Additionally, it may interact with other blood glucose-lowering medications; thus, patients should inform their physician about any other medications they are taking. If severe joint pain or blisters on the skin occur during the course of therapy, immediate consultation with medical personnel is needed, and discontinuation of the medication may be required.
