Blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes and prevention of cardiovascular events
This drug, by combining empagliflozin and metformin, is used to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. It specifically aids in blood sugar management alongside dietary and exercise regimens. Furthermore, in patients with type 2 diabetes who do not have adequate blood sugar control and have cardiovascular disease, care must be taken to prevent cardiovascular events. Therefore, it should be used safely with guidance from professionals to effectively manage blood sugar and cardiovascular health.
The recommended dosage is 1 tablet, twice daily. The dosage is determined considering each patient's current treatment regimen, efficacy, and tolerance within the limits of empagliflozin 25 mg and metformin 2000 mg. For patients who cannot achieve adequate blood sugar control with metformin alone or in combination with other medications like insulin, the recommended dosage is empagliflozin 5 mg twice a day (total daily dose 10 mg) and metformin.
This medication is used for diabetes treatment and works by combining two components to control blood sugar. While taking this medication, there is a risk of a rare side effect called severe lactic acidosis, so caution should be taken, especially in patients with impaired renal function or severe infections and dehydration. Additionally, when taken with insulin or other diabetes medications, hypoglycemic symptoms may occur, so blood sugar changes should be closely monitored. Patients with moderate to severe renal impairment or certain acute illnesses, type 1 diabetes patients, and patients with acute heart failure should not use this medication. Before and after examinations using iodinated contrast agents, this medication should be discontinued, and resumed only once kidney function returns to normal. Regular monitoring of renal function and blood creatinine levels is required during treatment, especially for elderly patients or those with reduced renal function who need more frequent checks. This medication may cause side effects such as gastrointestinal disturbances, urinary tract infections, genital infections, and increased urination, so patients should consult healthcare professionals if symptoms occur. It is safer for women who are pregnant or may become pregnant or breastfeeding to avoid using this medication. Moreover, alcohol ingestion may increase the risk of lactic acidosis, so it is best to avoid it during treatment. Attention should be paid to hypoglycemic symptoms during the course of medication, and avoiding irregular meals or strenuous exercise is important. For patients scheduled for surgery or experiencing acute illnesses, temporarily suspending this medication and consulting healthcare providers is advised. This medication is not recommended for children and elderly patients should have dosage adjustments based on renal function. In case of overdose, immediate medical attention is required, especially if lactic acidosis is suspected, swift emergency treatment is necessary. Lastly, this medication should be stored out of the reach of children and kept in its original container for safety.
