Effect for blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes and prevention of cardiovascular events
This medication is used to help adult patients with type 2 diabetes manage their blood sugar levels alongside diet and exercise therapy. It is particularly effective for patients whose blood sugar is not sufficiently controlled, and it can be used safely under a healthcare professional's guidance in cases of cardiovascular disease. This medication aids in diabetes management by improving blood sugar levels.
The recommended dosage is one tablet, twice daily. Dosage should be determined considering each patient's current treatment regimen, efficacy, and tolerability, not exceeding the maximum recommended daily amounts of 25 mg of Empagliflozin and 2000 mg of Metformin. Patients unable to achieve sufficient blood sugar control with Metformin alone or in combination therapy with other medications such as insulin should take 5 mg of Empagliflozin twice daily (a total of 10 mg daily) along with their current metformin dosage.
This medication lowers blood sugar; however, it should not be used by patients with significantly impaired kidney function, severe infections, heart problems, or liver dysfunction. During treatment, there is a risk of a rare but serious side effect called lactic acidosis, so if any unusual symptoms occur, consult a doctor immediately. Additionally, when using this medication in conjunction with insulin or other antihyperglycemic agents, the risk of hypoglycemia exists, so caution is required, and dosages of the antihyperglycemic agents may need adjustment if deemed necessary. If undergoing tests that use iodinated contrast agents, the use of this medication should be temporarily suspended before and after the procedure, and resumption should only occur after confirming normal kidney function. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should avoid taking this medication, and elderly patients or those with weak kidney function should undergo regular kidney function tests. This medication can increase urination, which may lead to dehydration or low blood pressure; therefore, patients who have dehydration symptoms or low blood pressure should be particularly cautious. During treatment, urinary or genital infections may occur, so any signs of infection require immediate medical attention, and vitamin B12 levels may decrease, so long-term users should have blood tests to monitor this. It is advisable to avoid alcohol consumption during treatment, and in case of acute illness or surgery while taking this medication, consult a doctor to consider temporarily halting medication use. Finally, this medication's safety and efficacy have not been established in children, so it is not recommended for patients under 18 years of age.
