Precautions

This medication is used to treat diabetes and helps lower blood sugar levels. It may cause a rare side effect known as severe lactic acidosis; therefore, patients with poor kidney function or issues with the heart or liver should not use it. Additionally, caution is necessary as hypoglycemia may occur when taken with insulin or other diabetes medications. Patients with reduced kidney function, acute infections, dehydration, severe injuries, or those scheduled for surgery should temporarily discontinue this medication. It is also safer for pregnant or breastfeeding women not to take this medication. This medication may lead to side effects such as urinary tract infections or genital infections, increased urination, and there is a risk of low blood pressure due to fluid loss. While taking the medication, regular blood tests should be conducted to monitor kidney function and vitamin B12 levels, and it is advisable to avoid alcohol consumption. If symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, shortness of breath, muscle pain, or lethargy occur, medical personnel should be notified immediately. Patients taking this medication should be alert to symptoms of hypoglycemia, and if such symptoms manifest, appropriate measures are needed. Furthermore, this medication should be stopped before and after tests involving certain contrast agents and can be resumed after kidney function returns to normal. Elderly patients should be cautious due to the risk of decreased kidney function, requiring dose adjustments and regular monitoring. Emergency treatment is necessary in case of overdose, especially for lactic acidosis, which requires immediate medical attention. This medication is not recommended for children, and while no special effects have been reported while driving or operating machinery, caution is still advised. Finally, this medication should be stored out of reach of children and kept in its original container.
