Effectiveness in controlling blood sugar in type 2 diabetes and preventing cardiovascular events
This medication is used as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is especially suitable for adults with type 2 diabetes who have insufficient blood sugar control alongside existing cardiovascular disease. Close monitoring for cardiovascular event occurrences should be conducted according to professional guidance during treatment. This medication effectively improves blood sugar levels, aiding in diabetes management.
The recommended dosage of this medication is 1 tablet per dose, twice daily. In cases where sufficient blood sugar control cannot be achieved with metformin alone or in combination with other medications such as insulin, the recommended dosage is 5 mg of empagliflozin twice daily (total daily amount of 10 mg) alongside the patient's existing metformin dosage. In cases where the tolerability for 10 mg of empagliflozin (total daily amount) is good, additional blood sugar control may be needed.
This medication is an antidiabetic drug that helps control blood sugar levels. However, it should not be used in patients with significantly impaired kidney function, acute infections, or dehydration. Additionally, it should not be prescribed to individuals with type 1 diabetes or those with a history of lactic acidosis or diabetic ketoacidosis. There is a possibility of hypoglycemic symptoms while taking this medication; therefore, dose adjustments may be necessary when used with insulin or other antihyperglycemic agents. Regular kidney function tests should be conducted before and during treatment, and drug administration should be discontinued if kidney function deteriorates. Before and after surgery or tests using iodinated contrast agents, this medication should be withheld for a certain period and can be resumed only after normal kidney function is restored. Alcohol consumption may increase the risk of side effects from this medication, so it is advisable to avoid it. The medication may cause side effects such as gastrointestinal disturbances, urinary infections, genital infections, and increased urination; any unusual symptoms should be promptly reported to a healthcare professional. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not take this medication, and elderly patients require caution due to the risk of decreased kidney function. During treatment, careful monitoring for fluid volume loss or symptoms of low blood pressure is necessary, and if signs of dehydration or severe vomiting and diarrhea occur, immediate consultation with medical personnel is recommended. Furthermore, regular blood sugar monitoring should be conducted to ensure no occurrences of hypoglycemia or ketoacidosis symptoms. This medication is not recommended for children, and in cases of overdose, immediate medical treatment should be sought.
