Effects on blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes and prevention of cardiovascular events
This medication is used as an adjunct to help control blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes in combination with empagliflozin and metformin. It is designed to effectively manage blood sugar when administered alongside dietary and exercise therapy. Special care should be taken in adults with type 2 diabetes who have cardiovascular disease, as they may require additional guidance from a healthcare professional due to the risk of cardiovascular events. Overall, this medication is used to improve blood sugar control.
The recommended dose of this medication is 1 tablet once, twice a day. The dosage should be determined based on each patient's current treatment regimen, efficacy, and tolerability, ensuring that the combined daily maximum dose does not exceed 25 mg of empagliflozin and 2000 mg of metformin. For patients who cannot achieve sufficient blood sugar control with metformin alone or in combination with other medications such as insulin, the recommended dosage is 5 mg of empagliflozin twice daily (total 10 mg daily) and metformin.
This medication helps in controlling blood sugar levels. However, it should not be used in patients with poor kidney function, acute infections, dehydration, or heart problems. Pregnant or nursing women should also avoid using this medication. This medication may cause hypoglycemia; therefore, special caution is needed when used in conjunction with insulin or other hypoglycemic agents. Furthermore, there is a risk of serious side effects such as lactic acidosis; if symptoms such as sudden muscle pain, difficulty breathing, or weakness occur, consult a doctor immediately. Regular monitoring of kidney function is necessary during the course of this medication, and discontinuation is required if kidney function deteriorates rapidly. Urinary tract infections or genital infections may occur; seek prompt treatment if any related symptoms appear. For surgeries or imaging with contrast, this medication should be paused for a period, and it should only be resumed after confirming normal kidney function. Elderly patients or those at risk of fluid loss must be cautious of dehydration and hypotension, requiring adequate hydration. This medication can lower vitamin B12 levels, so it is advisable to have vitamin B12 checks if taken long-term. Alcohol consumption may increase the risk of side effects from this medication, so it is recommended to avoid it. Finally, this medication is not recommended for children, and any abnormal symptoms while taking it should be reported to healthcare professionals immediately.
