Efficacy & effects

Blood glucose control in type 2 diabetes and prevention of cardiovascular events

View approved original text

This medication is prescribed to help improve blood glucose control in adult patients with type 2 diabetes. It is particularly used as an adjunct to diet and exercise by combining empagliflozin with metformin. It is effective for patients whose blood glucose is not adequately controlled and caution is required when administering to individuals with cardiovascular diseases. This medication is used to enhance blood glucose control and improve the patient's health condition.

How to take

Adult dose

1 tablet per dose, taken twice a day. Empagliflozin starts at 5 mg twice daily (total daily dose 10 mg), and can be increased to a maximum of 25 mg (total daily dose) if tolerance is good and additional blood glucose control is needed. For metformin, either the existing dosage should be maintained or adjusted based on renal function. It should be taken with meals, and if a dose is missed, it should be taken as soon as remembered, but not doubled.

Precautions

This medication is an antidiabetic that helps to control blood glucose. Care should be taken when taking this medication, as a rare side effect called severe lactic acidosis may occur. Lactic acidosis can lead to a dangerous state with excessive lactic acid buildup in the body, which can be fatal. Additionally, when taken with insulin or sulfonylureas, severe hypoglycemia can occur, so caution is necessary. Patients with moderate or severe renal impairment or acute kidney injury should not take this medication. It should also be avoided in the presence of acute illnesses such as dehydration, severe infections, heart failure, or acute myocardial infarction, and if surgery is planned, the medication should be discontinued 48 hours before the procedure. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take this medication. This medication is affected by renal function, so regular blood tests should be conducted to monitor kidney function. Particularly, elderly patients or those with impaired renal function should undergo testing more frequently. During use, there is a risk of hypoglycemia, so patients should maintain regular meal patterns and adjust their exercise and medication dosages accordingly. This medication can cause gastrointestinal disturbances (diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, etc.) and may lead to urinary or genital infections, so if symptoms occur, a doctor should be consulted immediately. Due to the risk of reduced fluid volume, care should be taken to avoid dehydration and notify the healthcare provider if symptoms of low blood pressure appear. This medication may lower vitamin B12 levels, so regular testing may be necessary. Alcohol may increase the risk of side effects associated with this medication, so excessive drinking should be avoided. While taking this medication, it is necessary to stop taking it for a certain period before and after tests using iodine contrast agents, and it should only be resumed after ensuring normal kidney function. This medication must be taken according to the prescribed dose and the doctor's instructions, and any abnormal symptoms should be reported to healthcare providers immediately.
