How to take

Adult dose

The recommended dosage of this medication is 1 tablet per dose, 2 times a day. The dosing should not exceed 25 mg of empagliflozin and 2000 mg of metformin based on each patient's current therapeutic regimen, efficacy, and tolerance. For patients using metformin alone or in combination with other medications such as insulin who cannot achieve adequate blood sugar control, the recommended dose is 5 mg of empagliflozin twice daily (a total of 10 mg per day), and the existing metformin dosage may be used.

Precautions

This medication is used in the treatment of diabetes and helps lower blood sugar. However, caution must be taken as it may cause a dangerous condition called lactic acidosis. Special attention is needed when used with insulin or sulfonylureas, as symptoms of hypoglycemia may develop. Patients with moderate to severe renal impairment, acute renal problems, heart failure, or liver dysfunction should not use this medication. Additionally, it should be discontinued before and after tests involving iodinated contrast agents until renal function returns to normal. Patients scheduled for surgery should stop taking this medication 48 hours prior to surgery and resume once renal function has recovered post-surgery. It may be necessary to temporarily discontinue treatment during dehydration, severe infections, or malnutrition. This medication may cause side effects such as hypoglycemia, urinary tract infections, genital infections, increased urination, gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, etc.), so patients should consult a doctor if symptoms occur. Particularly, vitamin B12 levels may drop, so regular blood tests are advisable. Women who are pregnant, may become pregnant, or breastfeeding should not take this medication, and it is not recommended for children or adolescents under 18. Elderly patients may experience reduced kidney function, so renal function should be regularly monitored and dosage adjustments may be necessary. In case of an overdose, there is a significant risk of lactic acidosis, requiring immediate hospital treatment, and blood dialysis may be necessary. Combining this medication with alcohol can be dangerous, so alcohol consumption should be avoided, and any potential drug interactions with other medications should be discussed with a doctor. Finally, keep this medication out of the reach of children and store it in its original container to maintain safety and efficacy.
