Effect in controlling blood sugar for Type 2 diabetes and preventing cardiovascular events
This medication is used to assist adults with Type 2 diabetes in controlling blood sugar levels in conjunction with dietary and exercise therapy. In particular, it helps manage blood sugar levels effectively by administering empagliflozin and metformin together. It can also be administered to adults with Type 2 diabetes who are not adequately controlled and have cardiovascular disease; caution related to cardiovascular event occurrence should refer to professional information. This medication improves blood sugar management and aids in the treatment of Type 2 diabetes.
The recommended dose of this medication is 1 tablet, taken twice daily. The dosage is determined based on the treatment regimen, efficacy, and tolerability for each patient, keeping within the maximum recommended daily dose of empagliflozin 25 mg and metformin 2000 mg. In cases where blood sugar control is insufficient with metformin alone or in combination with other medications, administer empagliflozin 5 mg twice daily. If there is excellent tolerability but additional blood sugar control is needed,
This medication can cause a rare but very serious condition called lactic acidosis, so you must consult a doctor immediately if any symptoms appear. In addition, there is a risk of hypoglycemia when used together with insulin or sulfonylureas, so caution is needed. This medication should not be used in patients with moderate to severe kidney impairment, acute kidney problems, severe infections, or dehydration. Patients with Type 1 diabetes or those in acute or unstable heart failure should also avoid this medication. Before and after diagnostic tests using radioactive iodine contrast agents, this medication should be temporarily discontinued, and it should be resumed after kidney function has returned to normal. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not take this medication, and if there is a possibility of pregnancy, they should consult a doctor. Regular kidney function tests should be performed during the use of this medication, especially for the elderly or those with slightly impaired kidney function, as more frequent testing is advisable. In cases with a risk of fluid loss, such as vomiting, diarrhea, or dehydration symptoms, the use of this medication may be temporarily suspended. This medication may cause side effects such as gastrointestinal disturbances, urinary tract infections, genital infections, and increased urination, so report any unusual symptoms to a doctor. Long-term use may lower vitamin B12 levels, so blood tests to check vitamin B12 status are necessary. Alcohol can increase the risk of side effects of this medication, so excessive drinking should be avoided during use. Hypoglycemic symptoms may occur while taking this medication, especially when used along with insulin or other hypoglycemic agents, so blood sugar should be monitored carefully. If food intake is restricted due to surgery or serious illness, this medication should be stopped 48 hours before surgery and resumed after kidney function has returned to normal. This medication is not recommended for children or adolescents under the age of 18, and dosage adjustments are necessary for the elderly based on kidney function. In case of overdose, seek medical attention immediately for appropriate treatment, as serious side effects such as lactic acidosis may occur.
