How to take

Adult dose

This medication is typically administered once daily with the evening meal; the 20/1000 mg extended-release tablet is taken as 1 tablet once daily. The 10/750 mg or 10/500 mg extended-release tablets are taken as 2 tablets simultaneously once daily. Precautions

This medication is used for the treatment of diabetes and can, very rarely, cause a serious condition called lactic acidosis. Lactic acidosis occurs when there is an excessive accumulation of lactic acid in the body, which can be life-threatening. Additionally, severe hypoglycemia may occur when used in conjunction with insulin or sulfonylureas, necessitating careful monitoring of blood sugar levels. Patients with moderate or severe renal impairment, heart problems, acute infections, or severe trauma should not use this medication. Particularly, it must be discontinued for a period before and after undergoing examinations utilizing iodinated contrast agents, and should be restarted only after confirming normal kidney function. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, patients with liver dysfunction, and individuals with severe lung dysfunction or excessive alcohol consumption should not use this medication. This medication poses a risk of hypoglycemia; thus, caution is needed with irregular meals, excessive exercise, or concurrent use of other hypoglycemic agents. Furthermore, rare side effects such as acute pancreatitis may occur; therefore, if abdominal pain or vomiting persist, immediate consultation with a physician is necessary. Regular monitoring of renal and hepatic function tests is required while taking this medication, as it may lower vitamin B12 levels, necessitating monitoring through blood tests. Alcohol consumption can increase the risk of side effects, so it should be avoided during treatment. If symptoms such as blisters or skin abnormalities arise, immediate notification to a physician is required, and in cases of severe joint pain, consultation regarding discontinuation of the medication is necessary. In case of overdose, seek medical attention immediately for appropriate treatment, and if needed, blood dialysis can be performed to remove the medication. Children and the elderly require special attention as the safety and efficacy of this medication have not been thoroughly established in these populations; frequent checks of renal function are essential for older patients. This medication must be kept out of reach of children, and transferring it to other containers should be avoided as it may compromise the quality of the medication.
