Improvement of blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
This medication is used to assist patients with type 2 diabetes in following dietary and exercise regimens. It especially helps improve blood sugar control for those who require combination therapy with tenegliptin and metformin. Therefore, it can be used effectively to improve blood sugar management.
This medication is generally administered once daily with the evening meal, and the dosage should be adjusted gradually to reduce gastrointestinal side effects associated with metformin. The 20/1000 mg sustained-release tablet is taken once daily, one tablet at a time. For patients taking the 10/750 mg or 10/500 mg sustained-release tablets, the dosage is two tablets simultaneously, once daily. For patients who cannot achieve sufficient blood sugar control with metformin monotherapy, the initial dose of this medication is to provide tenegliptin 20 mg once daily along with the existing dose of metformin. For patients switching from combination therapy of tenegliptin and metformin to this medication, the dosage may be initiated based on the previous doses of both drugs. Blood sugar control should be closely monitored and dosage adjustments made appropriately when converting from immediate-release metformin to sustained-release formulations. When administered with sulfonylureas, a reduction in sulfonylurea dosage should be considered to decrease the risk of hypoglycemia. The maximum recommended daily dosage is tenegliptin 20 mg and sustained-release metformin 2000 mg. The safety and efficacy of this medication have not been specially evaluated in patients who have switched from other hypoglycemic agents. Any changes in diabetes treatment should be closely monitored as they may induce changes in blood sugar control. To maintain sustained-release properties, this medication should be swallowed whole, without splitting, crushing, or chewing.
This medication can rarely cause a serious condition known as lactic acidosis. Lactic acidosis is a dangerous condition caused by an excessive buildup of lactic acid in the body and can be life-threatening if severe. Be cautious as this medication can cause hypoglycemia when taken with insulin or other diabetes medications. If symptoms of hypoglycemia appear, immediately consume foods containing sugar. Patients with moderate to severe renal impairment or those with heart failure or acute cardiac conditions should not use this medication. Additionally, this medication should be discontinued for a certain period before and after tests using contrast agents. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant are advised not to take this medication, and caution is also required for breastfeeding mothers. In cases of liver dysfunction, severe infections, trauma, or surgery, the administration of this medication should temporarily be suspended, and it can be restarted once kidney function has returned to normal. This medication may cause side effects such as gastrointestinal disturbance, liver dysfunction, skin rashes, or acute pancreatitis; consult healthcare professionals immediately if symptoms occur. During treatment, it is important to regularly monitor kidney function and blood tests, especially vitamin B12 levels. Alcohol consumption may increase the risk of lactic acidosis; therefore, avoid excessive drinking while taking this medication. Moreover, this medication may interact with various drugs, so inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking other medications. Elderly patients may experience a decline in kidney function, so dosage adjustments and regular monitoring are necessary. In case of overdose, seek medical attention immediately for appropriate treatment, and if necessary, the drug can be removed through dialysis. Lastly, this medication is not recommended for children as its safety and efficacy have not been established.
